Everyone was silent, for what seemed like ages. The only sound was the rustling of the leaves from the usual evening wind.
"I'm sorry. I have to get home. I'll see you later, Scarlet." Sky turned and ran towards his house without looking back at Mother Snake and I. I could tell he was upset, or maybe scared.
"Come on, child. Your father has to work overtime tonight. Let's get you to bed." Her voice was shaky. I could tell she was nervous about the war. If there was a was, Father would be overworked and wouldn't be home much. I was worried about Sky. He's always been fascinated by the idea of being a solider. I hope he isn't going to join the war. He barley has any fighting experiences. He could get hurt, or worse. Ma Brace and Lily would be devastated. I would be the most devastated of all.
I climbed in my soft single bed and pulled the homemade quilt that Mother had stitched together before she died. It still had a faint smell of her favorite spice on it. I pressed the quilt against my nose and breathed in the soft scent. Along with a few pieces of jewelry, the quilt was all I had left of her. Now with the conflict of Queen Rebecca and King Andrew, I was scared that I would lose so much more.
