  Chapter 1

No matter where I looked, chaos was all around me. The cries of both man and beasts filled the night sky, my skin crawled as they fill my ears, the sound of flesh tearing echoed as blood poured like rivers. The grass was tainted red from both sides. Bodies scattered everywhere as the war spread through the grounds like wild fire, out of control with a mind of its own. I stayed frozen as I watched with wide eyes, full of terror, seeing a young girl with dark hair being torn apart as the creature sank his teeth in her abdomen and sliced her open. I felt my stomach rise in my throat as I watched the young girl scream and thrash under the creature, blood spewing out of her mouth like the fountains that reside in the courtyard stained red. I felt ice pumping through my veins as I watched the girl with forest green hair being pinned to the ground.

Her wide, intense gaze locked with my frightened ones, "Gavin! Run!" She screamed as she fought against the creatures.

She wanted me to run, and let her fight these horrendous creatures by herself? She was going to risk her life to save mine, at what cost? I'm not special, there's absolutely nothing special about me. I can't just abandon her!

"Gavin!" I whipped my head to the side to see a blonde haired boy struggling in the arms of the foul creatures. "Save us all!" He pleaded before a heart-wrenching scream escaped his lips as the creatures dragged him away.

I turned to run as she ordered, the sound of wolves howled through the air, causing everyone to freeze in their tracks.

The full moon rose above us as the howling became louder, closer.

I awoke covered in a thin layer of sweat, my hair sticking against my forehead as I tried to even out my breathing and frantic heart.

It was just a dream, it was all just a dream, I told myself.

Yet, it felt so real. I felt the fear and adrenaline coursing through my veins at the sight of chaos. The feeling of dread consumed me as the thought of abandoning the girl with the forest green hair who fought those creatures with such bravery and fire.

"Gavin!" I heard my mother knock on the door, "Wake up and get ready for school, or you'll be late!"

"Yeah, yeah," I muttered to myself as I got out of bed.

I threw the covers and blankets over my bed as an attempt to make it look "decent" before walking towards my bathroom to take a shower. Once I was convinced that the dream was all in my head and I was scrubbed clean from all the sweat, I stepped out and wrapped a towel around my waist before grabbing another to towel dry my hair. I grabbed my tooth brush and squirted some toothpaste on it counted to 120 before rinsing my mouth. Stepping out of the bathroom, I changed into my usual tee shirt and hoodie attire with a pair of black jeans and black vans. I grabbed my phone and stuffed it in my pocket before grabbing my car keys and back pack and out of my room. I headed down the stairs and towards the kitchen to find my mother making breakfast.

She glanced at me before back at the food she was making, "Bad night?" she asked, noticing the bags under my eyes.

I sighed, "Very." I respond as I grabbed a piece of toast she left me on the counter.

"Just come straight home after school so you can rest up." she said as she plopped the eggs onto a plate, leaving no room for argument.

"Alright, I will," I smiled as I kiss her cheek goodbye, "See you then."

"Wait!" my mother called after me.

I stopped and turned around again to face her as she held a cream colored envelope in both hands, a smile spread from ear to ear as she looked at me, "This letter came for you. I didn't know you applied to Sanguinem Academy, and you got in with a full scholarship." She beamed as the water works started, "I'm so proud of you." She said as she hugged me tightly, and kissing my cheek before stepping back, wiping away any unshed tears, "Now off to school."
