Spontaneously decided to run from all her problems, she ended up striding carelessly along the lake few miles away from where she lives. How did I end up in this position? she wondered.

It was a busy and dreadful Monday day in Hong Kong. Everyone woke up early in the morning, attempted to look less tired than they really are and got ready for their destination. School for kids, work for adults, parks or libraries for the elderly, everyone has their own place to go to. Except for Nancy.

She was the last in the house to get ready for school, since she was the youngest. Andy, her 19-year-old brother, was devouring his breakfast on the dinning table, "this bacon is so fucking good! Is there more?" "Morning dad, morning mom." Nancy sat down quietly and bit on her granola bar and sipped on her yogurt. Eventually, she bid them goodbye and left the house.

She plugged in her earphones and started humming to the angelic voice of Shawn Mendes. Kids on the pedestrians seem happy. They clung onto their parents' hands and skipped their way to school. They have their destination.

And that was how Nancy's day passes by, like an ordinary 15-year-old teenage girl.

Not till she finds herself surrounded by a bunch of members from the soccer team. "Why are you even in this team? You suck if you ask me, and you certainly don't deserve to be in this team wearing this jersey representing our school, bitch. Go back to your slutty friends over there and practice your stupid cheerleading dance!" The team captain said so harshly that she looked flustered and was about to pass out any second. It was not helping how the other members started nodding their heads, agreeing and chanting that Nancy should be kicked out of the team.

She was supposed to feel embarrassed. Or angry. Or tired. But she didn't, she felt nothing.

Nancy started playing soccer since she was eight. One day dad came home with a ball on one hand, mini goalie on another and announced that they should all learn how to play, and Nancy loved it ever since. She loved how the grass on the field brushes past her boots. She loved how she can take control of the ball by doing simple tricks on it. How she doesn't how to communicate with anyone to cast the magic trick on the ball. And how she could ignore everything around her when she's concentrating on getting the ball into the goal. That's when she decided she has to get into the school team to walk towards her a destination.

She took off her jersey, changed into a simple graphic tee that says "I'm who I want to be". Took off to her last class after pulling on a pony tail and putting on deodorant. She didn't even bother looking at those girls who said those hurtful and disrespectful things to her. She understood that it was useless, she knows when to give up.

As the lesson went by, Nancy got bored. She stared at the teacher and everyone around her. That's the only thing that she enjoys doing. Observing people, their facial expression, movement, appearance etc. Does Mrs. Lam actually enjoy teaching history? Does she even know what she's talking about without looking at her notes? What's the point of learning these things when we wouldn't be using any of it when we grew up anyway? "Nancy... Nancy...? I was asking you which year did the Korean War happen." "1953 miss." "Yes, that's correct. Moving on to..." Mrs. Lam nodded her head, without complimenting or smiling at Nancy and started looking for her next victim. What's the point of learning? Or may be even surviving? We are all going to die someday, some where, somehow, and nobody would even remember after long enough. We will all turn into a nobody like the dead in the Korea War. And once again, she drifted off swimming in her own thoughts.

Kicking off her sloppy Dr. Martens, Nancy changed into a white tank top and sweat pants with a pair of turquoise flip flops and walked out of the house. She didn't care where she was going. She just kept walking, not thinking about the consequences. She kept walking, like how she's been doing the whole morning. She didn't know the reason why she got dressed and went to school, nor did she know why she spent the majority of her time listening to stupid lectures when she could be playing football or looking at people and picturing their life and story. And she came across a lake.

The lake looked really peaceful and soothing, like the grass on the field. She lay down on the massive rock beside the lake and closed her eyes. How would they react if I drown myself in the water? Would anyone care? And that's when Nancy realized that she felt numb about everything, even death.

How did I end up in this position? she wondered.
