Darker Than Coffee

A minute went by and then another as I watched the clock for mere amusement. The only company I had in the cafe was the barista and the lingering scent of coffee. I downed my third cup, to prevent myself from remarking on the "Great Schneider", who was wasting a great amount of my time. Whether it was a habit of the rich to keep others waiting or not, it was frustrating.

The door opened with the jingling of bells, the aroma of coffee replaced with the smell of choking, expensive cologne. That was enough of a sign for me. The purple and black striped suited man took a seat and stroked his commercial-worthy hair before he acknowledged my presence.

"What a lovely evening, isn't it darling", he asked. "How about we order a cup of coffee?" I mumbled a polite yes, to prevent myself from displeasing him. As he beckoned for a waitress to take his order, I went through all the nagging doubts in my mind.

He was a subject of great talk. A man blamed for the disappearances of many. A dark, secretive man who walks in broad daylight with not a worry on his mind. A sinister mastermind behind that angelic face but told by many to keep my guard when around him as he was a so-called 'leech' for people's secrets.

Once the cups  laid on the table, he struck conversation about a great deal of things from art to the weather to current affairs. The more he talked, the more I felt he was a chatty, jovial man mistaken by some as sinister and strange. As I took the last sip of my coffee, I made my final conclusion about him. My head felt heavy and the last I saw before the world turned dark was his bright yet crooked smile.
