He pushed a cup of hot chocolate my way as he smiled. "Yes I know your name summer. I make it a point to know all the names of the pups who decide to throw their lot in with the guard. Tell me summer... why did you put your name on the list of applicants?"

As he leaned on the counter my inner wolf watched his face trying to detached a hint of anger or any other emotion.

"I signed up because my dad died on guard duty. I figured the best way for me to honor his memory was to join the guard. Protect the ones he swore to protect." Lifting my hot chocolate up I took a tentative sip and nearly burned my tongue off but it was so good. Looking up I waited and watched Alpha Rick.
My inner wolf whined as he remained silent his ocean blue eyes searching me for what seemed like a millennium.

" You have a great sence of honor. What was the name your den mates gave your wolf?" His question triggered an involuntarty snarl from my wolf earning me a look that left me speechless as he sized him self up.

Looking down I whined 'they call her Shadow Barker, sir."

I nearly snarled remembering the day his son and daughter had given me the name. I had wished and prayed to every god I had ever heard of that they would forget I existed so I could change my name. The gods must not have liked me.

"You dislike the name your other wolf mates call you?" I watched him as he began pulling things out of the fridge. Reaching over I tried to take a price of turkey from among the ingredients earning myself a pop on the hand.

Was he kidding me? I dispised the name his children had given me. I had been a late shifter. While the other kids had had their wolves for at least a year or more I had just begun to shift. I had not had control over when my wolf side would speak out or show out. One day his son Ryder had caught me in a particularly bad case of my wolf showing out. I had been curled up in a ball in the shadows of the back of the class barking at the wall . Ryder had thought it was funny so he named my wolf barks at shadows.

"No sir... I do not like the name I was given." Not realizing just how angry i had beckme the mug I was holding shattered burning mg hand.

"If u don't like what you were named then change it. As a member of the guard you have to be what I need you to be. Can u do that summer or are you another weak female who will roll over and expose their belly at every little problem?" He threw a towel at me and for some reason I found my self getting angry at his words.

Lunging forward I shifted midair into my large black she wolf. Teeth bared and ready to fight Alpha rick caught me by the throat and threw me across the room.

"THERE WE GO! finally some fire. I admire your spirit... however I do NOT suggest you challenge me Shadow Eater." As he spoke he shifteted into a huge gray and black wolf. As his gaze met mine my wolf snarled and kept his gaze before sitting down and lowerin her gaze.

'Report to my office tomorrow. You will not be going to the guard' he said through our mind link.

I whined at his words and tried to argue. 'Alpha please...'

With a nip on the nose he silenced me as hr began to speak again.
'Report to my office. I believe you would be better off in the tactic squad'
