You hated Draco Malfoy. And, as he told you it every chance he got, you were pretty sure that he hated you too.
Why did you hate Draco? Well, you could say it was because of his annoying arrogance, or you could say it was because of his inability to listen to authority figures. You could also say it was because he was somewhat of a coward, or perhaps his impolite and unfriendly demeanor- in other words, you were never at a loss for reasons to despise Draco Malfoy.
But the most upsetting thing about him, the reason you hated the blonde haired boy as much as you did, could all be traced down to one simple, irritating fact: he hated you first.
And why? You had absolutely no idea- that was why it was so frustrating.
"(Y/L/N)" Draco sneered at you as you walked into Potions that morning, and you rolled your eyes as you walked past his desk.
"Imbecile," you greeted in return, replacing his last name with something much more fitting.
"Ouch, I'm hurt," Draco mocked, obviously finding your insult anything but effective.
This was the normal behavior for you two, insulting each other at every chance you got. Your best friend pulled you towards the potions ingredients impatiently.
"Don't you ever get tired of the same old routine with Malfoy everyday? Merlin knows it's annoying for the rest of us," she asked, picking out some chomping cabbage from the table.
"Trust me, if I could think of a better way to get on that ferret's nerves I would," you replied, looking towards the board to see what other things you needed for that days potion. The loud chatter of the classroom made sure that your comment was only heard by your friend.
"Why don't you ask him to the Yule Ball, I'm sure that'd be torture in his eyes," your friend joked, amused at the thought of the two people who hated each other the most dancing together.
"You say that like it wouldn't be in mine," you smirked, the two of you heading back to your seats, arms filled with ingredients.
Draco, however, while missing the comment about the ferret, had heard your friend's comment with ease as he walked towards the front of the room. And it had caused an elaborate plan to spring into his mind- one that he was sure would humiliate you for good.

It was now after dinner when Draco entered the Slytherin common room, sure of what his plan and how he should initiate it. You sat in a lounge chair, reading up on Transfiguration, as the blonde boy walked towards you.
"(Y/N)?" he asked, feigning shyness as most of the other Slytherins headed to their dorms, no one paying attention to the conversation.
You looked up, eyebrows rising in surprise when you realized it was Draco- and had he just called you by your first name?
"Yes...?" You asked warily.
"Well...there was something I wanted to- oh never mind, forget it, there's no way you'd say yes," he stuttered, his acting paying off as you completely bought into his fake distress.
"Draco?" you asked, perplexed at his behavior. You had never seen him like this. He seemed vulnerable and hesitant to say the wrong thing- it was as if the arrogant and hostile personality you hated had been torn away to reveal this softer, timid side. "What is it?"
"I just...I've been wanting to ask you for a long time," he lied, "Look, I know we're supposed to hate each other, but I cant help the way I feel and...Would you go to the Yule Ball with me?"
