The Receptionist

Umbra held Victor tightly against his chest as he stepped through the portal Time created, landing he and his team smack into the middle of the busy streets of Alcorith.

Silver Moon stood before the towering skyscraper that was Alcorith Horizons, lights still visible within the rows of windows that signified its offices. Umbra had to tilt back his head to see the entire building in all its industrial glory.

Time whistled, a smile on his face. "Wow," he commented, "this place is real big."

As they approached the building, Time attempted to lock arms with Umbra, only for the man to slyly dodge his touch. Umbra wrapped an arm around Matthew, Time giving Matthew a bitter glare.
Umbra was surprised when the sliding doors opened for them, showing him that Alcorith Horizons was still in business so late at night.

I guess they're open twenty-four seven, Umbra figured.

The lobby was unchanged from the first time they had visited, its generic structure only highlighted by portraits of famous mages. Beige couches lined the wall, small coffee tables standing beside them and offering a stack of pamphlets.

However, instead of the cheery eyed receptionist that had greeted them earlier, a young man sat at the desk, laying on his arms and fast asleep.

Umbra recognized the man almost immediately, identifying him as Infinity's demon wolf companion Ebone.

Time passed in front of Silver Moon, heading straight to the front desk.

"Hey, hey, hey!" Time said, tapping Ebone on the top of his head. "Wake up, we gotta do stuff."

Ebone stirred, yawning and stretching out his arms. Blinking, he pushed his red-rimmed glasses higher up his nose.

The man's Asian-like features lit up when he saw the people that had gathered in the room, and he started to wave wildly.

"Oh, hiya guys!" Ebone cried. "It's Silver Moon, right? Whatcha been up to?"

Umbra swept his bangs out of his eyes. "Business."

Ebone spun around in his swivel chair, still keeping uncomfortably happy eye contact with Silver Moon. "Ooh, fascinating." he commented.

Umbra groaned, shouldering Time out of the way to face Ebone. "Is there anyone else we can talk to?" he muttered, the stressful day having worn away his already short temper.

"Oh, totally!" Ebone said. He pressed the intercom button, leaning into the microphone. "Hey, Berri!" The demon wolf waited for a response.

Static crackled over the speaker, and finally a voice was heard. "Ebone, what could you possibly want? It's 10 o'clock at night! You should be asleep!"

Ebone blushed, tapping his fingers on the desk awkwardly. "Heh, heh, funny story, Berri..."

Umbra heard Berri groan. "What did you do?"

"You know how I was supposed to lock up at eight? Well, I kinda dozed off after Infinity went to our room." Ebone giggled bashfully. "So now I wake up, and what do you know, Silver Moon's here! You remember them? They also have a friend too. Not sure who he is, though."

"What do they want?"

Ebone gazed at them inquisitively, cocking his head.

Time took over. "Well, I gotta talk to your guildmaster. It's pretty important."

Berri replied from the intercom. "Tell them to come back in the morning. We're closed."

Time sighed, dissatisfaction crossing his expression. "Um, heh, heh, can't do that, you see." his voice was unsteady, like he was holding back rage. When Ebone opened his mouth to respond, Time's temper seemed to suddenly flare. "I asked to see Infinity now, mortal. Do not disrespect me like this." His voice got several octaves deeper, swirling eyes flashing with a surge of power.

Ebone, in shock, let go of the intercom button, cutting off his conversation with Berri.

The demon wolf's bottom lip trembled, startled by Time's frustration. "W-who are you?!"

"That's not important right now. Take me to Infinity." Time seemed relatively calmer now, but still not at his usual winsome disposition.

I guess today has ground on all of our nerves, Umbra thought. I can't blame him, given all the stuff he's been through. He felt a shudder go done his spine. But I'm glad he's on our side. I'd hate to be on the other side of his anger.

Ebone swallowed, slowly standing from his chair and approaching an elevator.

"Y-yessir. Please follow me. I'll take you right to Infinity's room."
