The Confusion
"Table for six, please," Time murmured, propping his arm on the hostess stand.
The hostess smiled. "And what's your name, sweetie?"
Time winked at Silver Moon behind him, who was trying their best to hide their tattered clothes and exhaustion from fighting.
"Chronos. Put the table under Chronos." Time affirmed.
"Alrighty, sweetie. Follow me!" The sever grabbed six sets of silverware and set off into the dinning room.
The pancake house Time had chosen to eat at was fairly large, but had a very quaint and home-style atmosphere to it. At nearly nine o'clock at night, the place was deserted, leaving Umbra and his team in an uncomfortable silence as they trudged to their table.
Matthew was the only one grinning, his childlike energy seemingly providing an everlasting drive. Victor laid on Matthew's back, fast asleep from stress and staying up past his bedtime. Aunora held Esper tight, the spirit appearing on the verge of slumber. Umbra had one hand in his pocket, the other softly patting Victor's back.
Time plopped himself in a seat at the large table the hostess had assigned them, encouraging his mercenaries to do the same.
Taking a out notepad, the hostess gave them a chipper look. "So, do y'alla know what you wanna to drink?"
"Do you have wine?" Time asked inquisitively, "Champagne, maybe?"
The waitress stared at him blankly. "We have sweet tea."
"I guess I'll take that then," Time said, scratching the back of his neck.
The rest of the table placed their drink orders (coffee for Umbra, Aunora, and Matthew; apple juice for Esper; and coke for Victor), and the waitress left the group to themselves.
Once Umbra confirmed that the woman was out of earshot, he leaned towards Time.
"Okay, Time," he said quietly, "where do we go from now? Do we try to track down Hawkins and Asher?"
Matthew tapped his fingers nervously on the table. "Yeah, and, um, me and Esper also left a woman tied up in the basement. She was guarding Clockwork."
Time didn't seem too concerned about the information Matthew and Umbra relayed, simply flipping through the laminated menu with an careful attitude.
"Eh, whoever they were, they're long gone now. When I gained my powers back in the forest, I did a quick scan of the vicinity. I didn't detect any signs of life." Time finally murmured.
Aunora crossed her arms. "Yeah, but like, don't you wanna find out why they kidnapped Clockwork? That's gotta be important, right?"
Time's eyes suddenly grew clouded, his smiled slipping for a split second. "It's over now. I don't want to push my luck any further. I'm already in hot water."
"What-" Umbra started to ask, just as the server returned with a tray of drinks.
"Awesome!" Time exclaimed, his dark mood vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. "Tea that's sweet! I love the South!"
He obviously doesn't want to talk about it, Umbra thought, bitter curiosity gnawing at him. How obnoxious.
Within a span of twenty minutes, Time ordered the group a feast of pancakes, and they received their meal.
The food was piping hot, and it smelled delicious. Several plates full of golden, fluffy pancakes sat before them, all slathered in a fine helping of fresh maple syrup and butter sat before them, and Umbra's stomach started to growl.
All this drama made me forget how hungry I was, Umbra realized, licking the saliva that was starting to drizzle from the corner of his mouth. I haven't eaten in hours.
Grabbing a plate, Umbra shoved a large forkful into his mouth, savoring the delectable taste of homecooked pancakes. Beside him, Matthew seemed just as pleased, having claimed a platter of his own.
For several minutes, Silver Moon stayed silent, all of them discovering their ravenous hunger as Umbra did. Finally, Victor turned to his father, speaking quietly.
"Daddy," Victor asked Umbra, anxiously scratching his fork against the his plate. "Can I ask you a question?"
Umbra smiled, taking a long sip of his coffee. "Of course, my dear. What is it?"
"So, um, earlier, Matt and this lady were talking, and he mentioned his 'sexual prowess', and I was kinda wondering what that meant... Like, he also said he was gonna make love to her, and then he got all close to her and bit her ear, which was kinda weird-"
Umbra choked on his coffee, making a variety of strangled noises until he managed to swallow it. He whipped his head towards Matthew, who had gone white in the face and was slowly sliding down in his chair.
"Matthew, my dear, what did you do?" Umbra said kindly, murder in his eyes.
Aunora cackled. "Man, I didn't know Matthew had it in him! Gettin' sexy with the opponent, holy crap! How'd it go? Did she like it?"
Esper frowned and shook his head, rubbing his forehead.
"I knew this wouldn't turn out good," he muttered to himself.
Victor looked from Umbra to Matthew, confused. "Daddy, I don't get it. Did you know Matt had sexual prowess? Are you mad at him for biting the lady? I thought only animals did that..."
Umbra kept a forced smile, softly touching Matthew on the cheek. "When we get home, dear," he said in a very threatening coo, "we're having a long, long talk. Understood?"
Appearing as a scolding child, Matthew hastily nodded.
Time slapped his hands against the table, laughing wildly. "Wow! You guys are so funny! You're like sitcom characters or something, I swear." Taking another huge bite of pancakes, he quickly said whilst chewing, "Oh, yeah! I forgot! We gotta head over to your guild. I need to talk to Infinity so you guys can get the cred for the mission."
