But, when the government fears you, you have nothing to lose. The nobles have the money, but we have the real power.
I entered into my quarters, making sure to lock the door. Time to get to business.
I took out my Audio Visual Communicator. The AVC is the one thing I keep from my past. I power it on. It's refreshing to see my native language appear on the screen as it booted up.
In my pocket, I fingered my lone memento of the kill last night: a strand of Storm's hair. Part of me knew he most likely wasn't a match. But, the rest of me hadn't given up hope.
Taking a hasty glance at the door, I opened up an application for DNA scanning. Gingerly I stuck the strand under the scanner.
No match. As always.
I would never find the person who ruined my life. Why did I keep trying?
I put the AVC away, back in its secret compartment of my bag. If someone found it, there would be questions. Questions I didn't want to answer.
I knew I should probably get some sleep, but first, I decided to send a message. I pulled out my radio communicator that had cost cost me thirty thousand notes on the black market. My AVC was cheaper and a dozen times better, but considering its origins, I can't connect to Alethea's devices.
I opened up and typed in Evander's number. My old friend and Rebellion contact didn't pick up, so I just left him and message.
"It's Min," I said into the device. "Just calling to say the storm has blown over."
You never can be too sure who is listening. "Anyways, I was wondering about new contracts. Any you want help on? It's been awhile since we last saw each other."
I ended the call and sighed. I curled up on the bed, my tears of desperation just a few blinks away.
How did I end up here? I had so much going for me. And then, It happened.
I shook my head and shoved those thoughts away. I couldn't change the past. But, I could make those who ruined my past pay.
My comms device rang. Evander.
"Hey, Min," he said with the same placid tone he always used. "I got your message. I'm actually on my way to Camilo. I'll be there in two days."
"Why? What happened?" I demanded.
"Can't I pay a courtesy call to my friend?" Evander laughed. I didn't return the chuckle. "No?"
