"Smile, the worst is yet to come, we'll be lucky if we ever see the sun..."
You slowly blink open your eyes, listening to your alarm song play. Drifting back to sleep, you think that maybe you should set your alarm to something less relaxing.
*time skip brought to you by sebastian stan on the beach listening to the waves from a conch shell he found at the beach*
"(y/n) (y/m/n) (y/l/n)!"
Oh no, you think groaning. It's your mom. That sound is definitely not relaxing.
"YOU'D BETTER GET YOUR BUTT OUT OF BED THIS INSTANT!"
You put your head under your pillow, pulling the covers up as far as they go.
"Got no where to go, we could be here for awhile. The future is forever so smile. Smile..."
Oh whoops. You sorta forgot to turn off the alarm. You wonder how many times the song played while you were sleeping. Suddenly, you're freezing cold. The covers have been yanked off your bed and are now on the floor. Great, now it'll take so much longer to make, so you'll be even later for school. You look up at my mom and she glares down at you.
"Why. Are. You. Still. In. Bed!" she hisses through her teeth.
"Ummm, I forgot to turn on my alarm last night?"
"Na, na na na, na na na, na na naaa..."
That was probably not the best excuse given that "Smile" is still blasting out of your iPhone. You sigh, then admit defeat, and roll out of the warm comfort of your bed.

Scarfing down your granola bar as you ran through the gate of your high school, you curse under your breath. You forgot your book for English! Hopefully the class won't need it, as you didn't yesterday. You're searching the steps for your friends, but the late bell rings. Ugh! Off to a bad Monday morning already- late, tired, hungry, forgot stuff, and on top of that you have to walk through the school alone. Great.
Your backpack straps cut into my shoulders as you reach your homeroom. You stopped by your locker already, so you already have all my books for math, and you swear that they got heavier over the weekend. You put my backpack next to your desk, and pull out your Harry Potter book to escape reality. Another eventful morning in the life of (y/n).
*time skip brought to you by bucky and natasha whispering about steve in russian- right in front of steve*
"Next time, if you're going to ask me to the ball, don't do it as a last resort!-"
"(y/n)!" A boyish voice shakes you out of your fictional world.
Oh god. It's them.
"Them" is James and Steve if you were wondering. They're best friends and you were just so lucky to have the pleasure of sitting in between them in homeroom.
"I was trying to read," You sarcastically retort.
"Well no one cares," James comments, obviously puzzled at the fact that you had spoken to the two. You had never said anything before, they usually just talked over you as you read your books.
"You're the ones that said my name!"
They give you confused looks and Steve says, "I didn't say your name. We don't even know your name." At least the skinny blonde boy looked apologetic. The same couldn't be said for his brown haired friend.
"It's (y/n)," you mutter, angling your body away from the two of them as best as you could, given the positions that you were all seated in.
"Sorry," Steve said genuinely.
Okay, maybe he isn't so bad, but James is still annoying and mean. Not that he had ever spoken to you before today.
As James turned to look at you, you noticed something. His eyes. They were a vibrant blue that just took your breath away.
Then he ruined it by remarking sarcastically with a smirk, "Take a picture, it'll last longer."
You blush and sigh, then went back to your book. It was going to be a long day.
*time skip brought to you by the fact that i'm watching political animals on netflix just to see seb because why not yknow?*
Sobbing, you race out of the stadium and into the school building, making a beeline for the bathroom. You just couldn't take it anymore. Being the butt of everyone's joke. This time they had verbally picked apart your carefully chosen outfit until it seemed ugly even to you. Why did you even call them your friends?
Storming through the now empty hallways you scream at the top of your lungs, "I AM A PERSON! I MATTER TOO!!" Nobody would hear. They were at some kind of sporting event.
No longer caring about the bathroom, you crumple to the floor, tears pouring down your cheeks.
"I am a person, I matter too, I am a person..." You mutter these words as you lean against the cold metal of the lockers and sink to the floor as the bright fluorescent lights glare down at you.
Footsteps echo through the passage and you freeze, squeezing your eyes shut and wishing to be invisible.
"(y/n)?" A kind and familiar voice breaks through the silence.
You vigorously shake your head.
Just go away, just go away.
Your wish goes unanswered as whoever it is gradually walks closer.
A figure bends down, then gently sits on the ground beside you.
You gasp.
That's James from homeroom! What is he doing here?
"(y/n)." Just your name. He doesn't say anything more. He simply sits there on the ground next to you as tears silently stream down your face.
Slowly, he reaches his hand over to yours.
He takes your hand.
"Why?" You ask, wondering the reason that this extremely popular boy is sitting in the hallway during a sporting event, holding hands with a nobody like you.
"Because." He says.
Maybe James Buchanan Barnes wasn't so mean and annoying after all.
Well, he was still annoying.
Sometimes.
