My daydream was interrupted by a sudden knock on the front door, making me jump a little. I wasn't expecting anyone. Still, I got up and passed a mirror to quickly fix my hair and straighten out my outfit.
"Coming," I replied walking over to the door.
Before I opened it, I looked through the peep hole to see who it was. The visitor was looking down so all I could see was their hair, so I just opened the door.
I'm pretty sure my heart had skipped a beat, or two, as soon as I was face to face with my guest. It was the new kid from school. He looked even more stunning up close. I was able to see his amazing features even better. Now I could actually see that he has black eyeliner on, which brings out his beautiful chocolate brown eyes.
He looked up and just stared at me, saying nothing for a bit, then seemed to suddenly notice where he was and why he was here.
"Um..hi. My name's Ashley. Ashley Purdy. But you can call me Ash if you want. I'm good with both. Uh, I just moved in to that house over there," he said pointing to the house next to the one across the street, "yesterday morning and I'm just going around meeting some neighbors."
I could see some moving boxes still outside his house along with one car and one motorcycle in the driveway. No wonder there were big moving trucks coming in and out of town the day before..
"Well hi. I'm Xena," (pronounced "zena") I said nervously. I still couldn't except the fact that I was talking to him! He's just so gorgeous!
"Well nice to meet you, Xena," he said with a cute little smile. God, how is he this perfect??
"Nice to meet you, too," I said with a, hopefully, friendly looking smile. "Would you like to come in?"
"Um.. Sure," Ash said.
I stepped aside for him to walk in. I closed the door and passed him to lead him into the living room. I gestured for him to sit in one couch while I sat on the other couch next to it.
"So where did you move from?" I said as I sat down.
"Berger, Missouri."
"Oh cool."
"Yeah. I live with my grandparents though. My actual parents died in a car accident when I was 4."
"I'm so sorry. I can understand. My dad left my mom when I was 3 months old. According to my mom, he was found dead about 2 years later due to a drug overdose. So now it's just me and Mom living here."
"Wow. I bet that's hard to go through as well," Ash said, sorrow on his adorable face.
"Yeah. She's not that nice either. I have to do everything she tells me to," I said starting to lower my head. "You can't really say she's the best mother a kid could have. She's strict on many things. The only reason I'm even allowed to have a phone is because she has to call me whenever she needs me to do one of her chores or tell me to pick something up for her somewhere." At least she wasn't here to hear me saying this. She would tear my throat out. But of coarse, I didn't say that part out loud to him.
"Damn. Where is she right now?," he asked.
"At work. She doesn't get home until another hour," I said checking the clock on my phone. It was now 7:58pm.
"That must suck," he said looking down at the floor now. "I never really had any serious problems with my grandparents so I'm not sure what it's like."
"Believe me, you don't want to," I said in a quieter voice than before.
At this point I was so ashamed of talking about Mom that I was looking the opposite way of Ashley at the wall.
She's not such an exciting topic to talk about for me. She's treated me like a pet all my life. Every time she brought in a new guy to sleep with I had to put up with them. Which was about every 2 weeks. I had to cook for them, throw the trash out, clean up after them, and deal with the noises they would make in the only bedroom we have at night. You can only assume what they were doing.
The living room was also my bedroom. I slept on the couch with 2 blankets, which were folded neatly on the floor beside the couch I was sitting on. All of my clothes were in 2 plastic boxes, also next to the couch I was sitting in. I don't have much to wear, other than that and some jewelry. The only other things I have are my phone and the things in my black backpack for school. Just one binder, a folder, 2 journals, 2 pens, and 2 pencils.
"Yeah, I'll take your word for it," Ash said.
It was silent for a while, but seemed like eternity. Especially when a hot guy was sitting in the other couch in my house talking to me and not my mom. I turned my head towards him only to see he was looking down at his hands now.
He was the one to break the silence, startling me a bit.
"Anyway, you're the only person that lives around here that's about my age. The others are just kids, babies, and grown adults. And you're in a few of my classes," he said finally raising his head to meet with my eyes, "Is it ok if I hang out with you more often and be friends?"
This caught me by surprise. Had I already made such an impression on him to make him even want to hang out with me? I didn't have much friends. Enough to count on one hand. I didn't even see them all the time. It wasn't easy for me to make new friends either. But we had only talked for a few minutes and he already wanted to be my friend? This was just too good to be true. But I guess not this time. This was real. He actually wants to hang out with me!
"Yeah. Of coarse," I said smiling.
I was truly happy. I can't really remember the last time I was actually happy. Yes, I do smile from time to time, but it doesn't mean that I'm actually happy. It's just for show and to make people think that I'm happy so they don't ask any questions.
He smiled and looked down at his hands again and... did I really just see him blush a bit?? No, it couldn't have been. I couldn't exactly see his face very well, for some hair was covering part of it.
"Cool," was all he said.
Another awkward silence was set in between us for maybe a minute. But it was a happy, awkward, silence.
After the silence was broken, we just got into talking about school and all of our classes.
Approximately another half hour passed until he noticed the time and had to go. As I lead him to the door I was kind of sad that he had to leave so soon. But Mom would be home soon so I guess it was for the best. She probably would have killed me if she found out I had someone over.
He smiled at me one more time and waved goodbye.
"Bye Xena. It was nice meeting you."
"Bye A-"
He surprised me with a hug. I just stood there for a second not knowing if I should hug him or not. Hesitantly, I slowly hugged him back still unsure.
"I'll see you tomorrow," he said and stepped outside to be swallowed by the night's darkness.
"Bye Ash," I whispered.
