November 24, 2044.
On the morning of November 24, 2044, I knew that I was scheduled to walk out of prison. This grey bearded guard, 4 years in Air force, 6 years as a firefighter, and from then to now, dealing with belligerent criminals such as I for an estimate of 23 years. I watched as he shut the metal door and locked it from behind. I woke up and didn't quite know how to process the reality that my day had come.
I climbed down from my rack before 3:00 am, filled a cup with instant coffee, and then I walked to a common area of the prison. I wanted to be alone, to sit and look around. I fixed my eyes on the steel beams above, looked at every detail of the architecture, and I smiled when I thought that in only a few hours, I would walk outside of prison boundaries for the first time in eight years. It didn't really make sense to me. I couldn't comprehend why we equated justice with decades in prison. I spent all of my energy trying to figure out steps I could take to prepare for my return to society. It was a pretty great feeling, today, was the day. It didn't even feel real.
I got up and walked over to Ashley, a girl I had grown accustomed to since day one. She was in prison for the exact same reason I was there. When I was sixteen, in the middle of the night I had decided to walk out to my fathers race track. Not aware of knowing that anybody was in the garage, I stole 25grand worth or car parts. I was charged with burglary and trespassing on private property after closing hours. In court my dad had tried convincing the judge that it wasn't me who had stole the car parts, to be honest I don't think he knew it was. But I confessed to my mistake. There were at least four witnesses, plus the outside camera that hung above the garage door. They had proof.
"McCormick." I suddenly jump, and look over to see the grey bearded guard standing at my cellar door. Cautiously I say "Yes sir?" Everybody stopped to look.
"Grab your Belongings, and come with me."
