Beside You ( 5SOS )

CHAPTER 1

Present Day

Why is this happening to me? I though to myself as my mom repeats my name over and over again, yelling at me to get up. "OKAY!" I scream back, not wanting to hear her voice anymore. I had started my sophomore year in high school, and let me tell you.. it was a hell hole. I wasn't popular or anything, yet i wasn't some nobody. I was just a normal girl, trying to get through life, day by day.

I got up, making my way to the shower. I let the scorching hot water wake me up a bit before I got out. It was late January; the cold and bitter weather made me shiver. I changed into leggings and an oversized sweater, brushed my hair out and kept it natural, which was wavy, and applied light makeup. I never really was much of a makeup person, so whenever I put it on, I would go light and simple. After being satisfied with my look, I walked downstairs to see my sister on her phone and my mother making breakfast. My dad was sitting at the table, reading the newspaper. Oh you oldie, still reading the newspaper. People have phones and they can look up news that way.

"Hey sweetie. I made some breakfast," my mom said, motioning Brittany over. My sister sat next to me, not saying anything, preoccupied with her phone. My mom put some pancakes on our plates and I ate quickly. Calum was going to pick me up at 7 like he usually did. Brittany was a senior and didn't have a first period so she could've woken up later but she usually just chills until she has to leave. I looked outside and saw Calum pull up. Calum and I became friends when we were 10, well, when he moved here. He moved from Frayerville, where-ever that was. Since then, we've always been best friends.

"Okay guys, I'm leaving," I tell my parents as I slip on some boots and head out. "Bye have a good day" "Bye honey" They reply. I walk to Calums car and sit shot gun. He drives to pick up the last person to our group, Taylor. We arrived and she hopped into the back seat.

"How were the movies with Justin?" I asked her, smirking. In response, she hit me in the back of the head. I smiled. Oh what a friendship we had. "The movies were fine, actually. Not only did he try to kiss me in the theater, but when I turned him down for another date, he gave me the finger and called me a bitch." I laughed instantly, "Wow what a douche." "Total douche," she replied. I thought back to the time I had my first date at the movies. It was quite nice until a bunch of his friends came over and insulted me. Have I mentioned I don't do well with guys?

I slung my backpack over my shoulders, hopped out of the car and walked with my friends into the dreaded building. If there was anything I hated more than the school, it was the people. Students and teachers just didn't mix with my life. Once I walked through the main doors, I was pelted with the intoxicating smells of perfume and cologne and possibly some alcohol. I coughed and led my friends down the hallway quickly, knowing we wouldn't want to be there any longer than we'd have to.

We split ways and went to our lockers, getting what we needed for the day. I shuddered in disgust as I came across a couple making out next to my locker. They saw me and ignored me, like they usually did as I quickly got my things and left.

I made my way to my first period class, English. I was bummed that I didn't have it with Cal or Taylor, but at least I had my friend Ashton. Ash wasn't really part of our group cause he hung out mostly with his musical friends but he was still my friend. When I walked into class, he wasn't there yet, and I usually sat next to him. I took a seat in the back, hoping no one would sit next to me. I went to get out a pencil when I heard the chair move out next to me. "Hey Ash." I said without looking up. He didn't answer so I looked up and saw that it definitely wasn't Ash. Instead it was Tyler Hartman a.k.a the hottest boy in our grade, according to every girl. Yeah, every girl except me. I didn't see what was so good about him. All he did was play girls and leave them after. But he just puts everyone under his love spell and gets his way. Well it wasn't going to happen to me. I wasn't going to fall for his tricks.

"Hello there sweet stuff." He said, trying to spark a conversation. I rolled my eyes, not even bothering to answer him back. Our teacher, Mrs. Shaw came in and started teaching the lesson. With Tyler annoying me, it was hard to pay attention. Minutes later, I see Ashton walk in, trying to be sneaky so Mrs. Shaw wouldn't see.

"Ashton Irwin, late. Again"

He saw me and smiled, but then saw Tyler, and frowned. I mouthed "i'm sorry" to him but he turned around and sat in an empty seat in the front. God, now was he mad at me?

Class finally ended and I got up to go talk to Ashton. Before he could say anything to me I quickly blurted out, "Ash he sat next to me. I was trying to save you the seat but he came over and just sat down." He looked at me like I was crazy or something. My heart stopped beating for a second but he finally smiled and said, "It's fine Cass. I'm not mad at you. I understand." I sighed in relief and smiled at him.

"We should probably get to class, yeah?"

I walked with Ashton to my second period class, American History, cause he had it with me. I was relieved that Taylor had it with me too. Mr. Kreston, a short, stubby guy who was balding and always was grumpy about every little thing. I kind of felt bad for him, but then again, I really didn't. History wasn't my favorite subject and I mostly zoned out a lot. That would explain why I'm flunking in this class.

The rest of the morning went by pretty smoothly and at last it was lunch. I had lunch with Calum while Ashton went to band and Taylor went to math. Sitting down next to my best friend, he started rambling on how much he wanted to start this band and how they only needed a drummer. Man, this boy could talk forever. "Okay Cal! I get it!" I yell at him. He whines, "how can we get a drummer?" "I don't know" Nor do I care. I finish eating and catch Tyler staring at me. HOLY FUCKING SHIT STOP STARING AT ME. I walked back to Cal quickly, hoping to avoid Tyler.

"Hey Cass?"

"Yes Calum Thomas Hood?"

He smirks and continues with what he is saying. "I'm having a get together kind of thing on Saturday, you wanna come?"

I bite the inside of my lip trying not to smile, "Nope"

"Oh come on, why?" He frowns.

I giggle, "Geez Calum, you're so gullible, of course I'm coming. Who else is going to be there?"

"Taylor and a couple of my friends from my old town"

"Alrighty, I'll be there"

He smiles at me and we hear the bell ring. I have a free period next so I wander the halls a bit. I hear some one banging on drums in the band room. Me being the curious person I am, I sneak a peek inside. Woah. Is that Ashton? My Ashton? My eyes widen as I see him banging away, but making music. He's so good at playing the drums, it's quite unbelieveable.

I guess I must have zoned out and in point of view if Ash looked up because the next thing I know, he's standing right in front of me.

"Hey Cassidy." He says before giving me his cheeky smile.

I jump out of my trance and see him. "Oh. Hi"

"Um, would you like to come in?"

I nod and walk into the band room.

"So... you play drums?" I ask him.

He nods, "Yeah I've been playing them for awhile now actually"

"Are you in a band?"

"Psh no, i'm not that good."

"Hey don't say that, you're actually really good"

"And how would you know that?"

Shit. Did he even see me when I was 'spying' on him? I don't answer him, but instead I walk to the drum set and start hitting random ones. Ash starts playing a little something, that something being amazing. After he finishes, I am speechless. "ASH THAT WAS AWESOME!" He takes a little bow before sitting back down. Hm. Maybe Ashton could be the drummer for Calum's band.
