"Come on, Kells. You've been in this stupid dorm room for three days. You need some fresh air." One of my closest friends in uni, Justin, whined. He's been in my dorm room for not longer than three minutes and he had already made his way to my nerves. Although what he said was true, I just have to finish with this current chapter that I am reading. Finals week is up in three days and I've been doing everything that I can just so that I could squeeze in some more time for the dreaded week to come. I can't fail any of my tests; failing isn't in my list of options.
"Stop being so loud and whiny and annoying and dramatic, you know I have to ace all of my tests. And for the record, I go out of my dorm whenever I have to go to my classes." I rolled my eyes at him although he cannot see me seeing as I never lifted my head up to look at him.
"Ugh, Kells! Why do you have to be such a fucking nerd?" And of course, the amazing Justin Hills whined again. He then flopped himself face-first on my bed, causing for some of my books to drop with a subtle thud.
"Shut up. You know I have to get high score in my tests. I don't want to lose my scholarship." I mumbled, loud enough for him to hear. Honestly, I am not the most popular guy in university so I don't really have that much friends. But you know what they say, you should keep your circle small. And quite frankly, it doesn't really bother me. I am close with all of my friends and they are good to me and I think that's all that matters.
"I know! But you don't have to, like, enclose yourself in this room for days." He shot back, his words muffled by my pillow.
I smacked the back of his head. "Instead of whining, why don't you grab my book for me, will 'ya?"
"Ow! That wasn't necessary, dickhead!" I shook my head at my foul-mouthed friend and placed the cap of my pen back to its rightful place, pushing my glasses up and fixing my hair that's been pulled up into a small ponytail-like style. I made a little mental note to trim my hair since it's getting a little bit annoying now. "Anyways, I'll head over to the cafeteria now. By myself. Since my friend isn't complying at the moment." He added on as he tossed my books straight to my lap.
"Next time, I promise." I said and smiled sweetly at him. "Oh, do you happen to know any nearby store hiring? I badly need the extra pay." I asked sheepishly. This is one thing about me, I get really really shy with my friends whenever the topic about money comes around. My friends are either a part of the middle class or really rich, so they do not have to worry about money.
Since I do tell them everything that goes on with me, they of course know about my dilemma and my mom's situation back in Michigan. One morning, my mom called me and asked if I had extra money with me. She said that Kayla, my sister, needed money for a school project and event. Unfortunately, considering our very tight budget, my mom didn't know where else she would get the money. I couldn't blame her, though. I know that she's working extra hard it's just that, being a single mother who is raising a thirteen year old child by herself and still manages to keep her son to college is a very heavy responsibility. I don't want to add up to my mom's load so I've been working so hard to keep my grades up just so that I could keep my scholarship. Also, I've been working every afternoon at the school's bookstore as a sideline. I didn't tell my mom about the small job because I know that she wouldn't approve of it. She tends to mask all of our problems and tells me that we're fine and that I shouldn't worry about her and my sister but although we are miles away, I know that she needs my help. And I don't really mind helping, actually."Nah, sorry man. But I could loan you some-"
"No no no no, I'm good. I'm just looking for another job, don't worry about me." I said, shrugging my shoulders. I don't really like borrowing money from anyone. I know that it's the easiest way to get money but I just think that the entire 'I'll pay you back as soon as I can' thing can ruin any kind of friendship especially when an unfortunate twist of events occur.
"Well, alright, man. But if you ever need money, don't ever hesitate on asking, yeah?" Justin gave me that look that a mother would give her child whenever she tries to talk to them about their love life or some deep thing like that.
"Yeah yeah. Thanks, though." I muttered, offering him a small smile. I've been looking for an extra job for weeks and so far, my luck has been set to the side.
He nodded hesitantly, "Do you want anything? I could bring you food?"
"Oh, uh- no thanks. I'm good. Still got loads of studying to do. Thank you so much, Justin." I answered back, flipping through the pages of my thick text book, ignoring the rumbling that's been going on in my stomach. Honestly, I've skipped too many meals to count but I've been blocking the feeling with studying and loads of water. I have to say, it's working. Although, I'm not quite sure on how long I could last without eating a proper meal. My mind is just set to saving up as much money as I can so that I could send some to my mom. I know that she doesn't want me to give them money but she wouldn't be able to do anything once it gets to them. It's not like she'd do the effort on sending it all the way back here in San Diego.
"You are such a geek." Justin shook his head and smiled at me, waving one last time as he finally left me with my books.
