When you meet a person for the first time, lots of things come to mind. No matter how much we don’t want to judge them, we kind of do. Then in the back of our minds, we worry about what the other person is thinking about us. I know I have always wondered what others think of me. I’m just your average 15 year old. I’m tan (aka brown), long black hair, and average height. We all worry what they are thinking. I think the first thing to come to the mind of a new girl that sees me would be: “Who’s that cutie next to her?” I only think that because, I’m with my best friend twenty four seven. See, me and my guy best friend are kind of always with each other. When we meet new people, we meet them together. Like right now, we’re at the mall café and a girl is hitting on him. Girls are always throwing themselves at him, not that I care. I know you all think I love him or some crap like that. Everyone thinks that, but it’s not true. Adam is really just my friend. We are just two crazy brown kids spending our time together. I’m not dumb enough to fall for him.
“Tasnim?” Adam called shaking his hand in my face. I swatted his hand stunned from his voice.
“I have told you a million times to call me Taz!” I whined. See, no one really knows how to pronounce my name. It’s one of the perks of not being 100 percent American, so my name is uncommon. When I got to middle school, Taz kind of just stuck. So, I went from Tasnim to Taz.
“I know. Taz just sounds so weird.” he said as if I was the crazy one.
“Adam, shut up,” I said stealing his drink out of his grasp.
“Hey!” he said reaching for the drink.
“Um, I don’t think so. Anyway, what were you going to say?” I asked.
“I just got a number,” he said waving a paper with a perfectly etched lip stick stain left on it.
“Oh, so she’s one of those girls,” I said raising my eyebrows at him.
“Excuse me? Just cause she kissed the napkin, doesn’t make her a slut,” he said defending a girl he barely knew. To be honest, if she was, I know Adam wouldn’t call her. He isn’t a player and knows how to pick a good girl.
“I know, I know. I’m sorry. Can you take me home now?” I asked him.
“Yeah, lets go.” he stepped up and offered a hand. I took it and we walked out raising a commotion from all our laughter.
When we got to my house, I stepped out, waving goodbye as he drove away. After our whole day together, I was exhausted. We have been best friends forever, and this always happens. We hang out, lose energy, and then sleep in late the next morning. Then we end up hanging out again. No worries though, we don’t hang out everyday. Just most days.
Ever since we were younger it has just been this way, and I like it this way. Even though he’s 17, and I’m 15, we always spend time together. We became friends when I was 13, and it hasn’t changed much since then. Other then the fact that he can drive now. To be completely honest, he might be the only real friend I have, but I’m okay with that. Having too many girl friends gets complicated. I learned my lesson from old drama.
Now he’s my only best friend. Don’t get confused though, I do have close friends that are girls. And Adam has other guy friends. But in the end, for both of us, we have a different friendship. That’s why we usually hang out just me and him. His older friends don’t like me, and he isn’t very fond of my friends. It’s okay though, we just spend time with our friends separately. But of course, we do hang out with others. We aren’t weird hermits. We’re just different people around others. Especially when he’s in a relationship, but I don’t want to worry about that. I’m exhausted.
