I scrambled backwards until my back hit the car, slight tremors running through my hands. If I could just reach the glove box, I could get the gun Gerald insisted I keep in there for protection. "Stay back!" I screeched at the wolf, whose face crinkled in what could only be amusement. Taking the slight distraction, I lunge back into the car and yank open the glove box, whipping out the pistol inside and aiming it at the wolf. "I know what you are; shifter. And I've got some silver bullets with your name on then if you don't leave!" I was a bluff; the bullets weren't silver. But he didn't know that, did he? The wolf backpedalled immediately, giving me a hurt puppy look and a growl before sprinting off into the forest. Adrenaline still running though my veins, I carefully extend my power over air to make sure that he was really gone. I could feel the air whipping by him as he fled, most likely back towards his pack. Breathing heavily, I pull back in my powers and shakily grab my iPhone. I unlock it and quickly scroll through the contacts before finding Gerald's number. I press the call button and hold the phone to my ear, fingers trembling. "Hello?" Gerald answered, "why are you calling me, Minerva?" I almost sobbed in relief, "Gerald! Am I glad to talk to you! Listen, I just crashed my baby into a tree thanks to this shifter who ran across the road. I swear, after I got out, he was walking towards me!" I was finally calming down, Gerald's soothing voice working wonders. "By the Gods! I can't come and get you, I need to be in class in thirty minutes. But Vittorio is free, I'll give him a call." He said. "Thanks, Gerald. I won't move a muscle." I replied, my good mood restored. I could hear Gerald chuckle disbelieving my before hanging up with a quick goodbye. Vittorio was another one of our friends, and very different. He was a vampire, no matter how hard he tried to hide it. His appearance didn't help either, with gorgeous shoulder length black hair and striking blue eyes, not to mention the scar going across his left eye and parallel ones down the corner of his lip. He looked terrifying, but it was hard to fear and hate a kind man your age who lived alone with a little girl to take care of. About a year back, Vittorio had been drugged and raped by some woman, and she was stupid enough not to use protection and be on the pill. Nine months after the incident, a baby had been left at Vittorio's house, with a note from the woman who didn't want anything to do with the child. Oh, how I hate her! The police had never been able to catch her, and even worse, she had made my friend deal with the outcome of her actions! We don't know if the baby is also going to be a vamp, but I can tell Vittorio is praying she isn't. From what I can gather, it is all quite taxing; having to hide from shifters and get blood from a willing host. We, being our group of friends and I, have offered multiple times to give him our blood, but he always refuses. He says it's because we're his friends. I guess I can see why he wouldn't want to drink from us, but it would make his and the baby's life so much easier! Vittorio (with a little help from me), named the child Kaolin, and she was the cutest little thing, sharing her father's midnight black hair. Unlike her father, she had chocolate brown eyes. Before I knew it, I heard the purr of an approaching vehicle, and soon I could see Vittorio's mustang. It was beautiful, with its black and blue paint job, but it had nothing on my baby. Vittorio was in the drivers seat, and I could easily see the worry in his blue eyes. He pulled over next to my car and got out, rushing over to me. "Minerva! Gerald told me you met a shifter? Do you want me to kill him?" He asked, only half joking, worry evident in his features. I laughed, "not yet, but I do need a lift. I can call a towing company on the way back. I'm skipping class today." I said it so bluntly that it made the worried vampire break into a fit of chuckles. "Sounds good. How about I take you back to my house and you can watch over Kaolin? I have to go to work later, and Tasmin said she couldn't babysit today." He said. Tasmin was another one of our friends, and still in high school. While she did have a job as a waitress, no one could say the extra pay Vittorio gave her wasn't helping. I wonder why she couldn't make it... "Sure, I can watch her. How are things going at work?" I asked. Vittorio was a detective at the police station, and it seemed to wear him down more often than not, despite his vampire blood. "Exhausting. We've gotten in two more homicide cases, and my gut tells me they're related to the three other cases from last month. They all were killed the same way, a shredded throat. Besides that, there was nothing else linking them. I think it might be a shifter doing the killings. Maybe a feral panther? Whatever the case, I've had to work more than usual, and I'm spending less time with Kaolin than I wish to." He said sadly. Even though Kaolin had been created through rape, Vittorio still loved her, as we all did. In a way, I was glad the woman had left her with my vamp friend. Because really, who wants a baby to be around a rapist?! "Don't worry. If you want, we can talk to the gang and the can keep an eye out for anything suspicious. And the world isn't on your shoulders. It's okay to take some time off to be that little angel! Come on, let's get back to her." I said, placing a hand on Vittorio's shoulder. He gave me a small smile, and we climbed into his car as I dialed a towing company on my phone. Vittorio might have a nice car, but nothing would replace my baby! Little did I notice the grey eyes watching us from the shadows of the forest....
Well, here's the next chapter! Hope you enjoy... What do you think of Vittorio? I wanted to help bring light to the fact while it is mostly women who are raped, men are raped as well (by both genders) I don't mean to offend anyone, just show that it happens. Anyways, what do you think will happen next?;)
