Megan called me as I was walking home. The usual thing she does when she feels lonely or bored.
“Hey” I said happily, even though I wasn’t happy at all.
“Hey, so did they tell you what happened to your dad?”
The one bad thing about Megan is that when she is bored she calls you. Then she asks for gossip and then tells everyone. I could hear in her tone of voice that she wanted to know everything. It had only been a day and suddenly everyone wants to know everything.
“Yeah they said it was a stroke.”
“Wow that sucks!” She said surprised. “Didn’t his eyes bleed?”
“Yeah they did but they said it was because of the stroke.”
“Okay just asking.” She said quietly.
Megan never just asked about anything. She was thinking about something or she sounds like she knows what happened.
“Hey do you remember when we were playing truth or dare?” I asked
“Yeah, what about it?”
“Do you think it could have been Bloody Mary?”
Megan started to laugh hysterically.
“Bloody… Bloody… hahaha”
“Thank for being nice about this Megan!” I yelled at her.
She stopped and thought about it, I could hear the wheels in her brain turning.
“It could have been Bloody Mary. I mean his eyes were scratched out, weren’t they?”
I started to think that maybe I shouldn’t have brought it up. Just like with the librarian. Lying should get me out of it but then something would seem weird. Hoping that she wouldn’t notice I slowly tried to get my way out of the situation that I had created.
“Well no not really. But that a good point, so it wasn’t her then.” I said quickly.
“Fine then if you don’t want to talk about it, I’ll just hang up!” She yelled and then all I could hear was beeping.
She had actually hung up on me because I tried to get out of it. I walked along the streets edge jumping in large puddles, getting my jeans wet, when I realized that maybe I had to talk to someone about this. Not just keep it bottled inside me. I had to know the real reason why dad died or I won’t be able to sleep at night. Getting closer to the house I could see Becca standing outside the large front door of the house with her arms folded.
“Did you get me my food?” She asked in disgust
“Yes I did. Here take it! And you owe me!” I yelled at her as she grabbed to food out of my hands and started shoving it down her throat.
“I don’t owe you anything, your living in my house now!” She mumbled with her mouth full of food.
I walked up the stairs to my room and sat on my bed. Making squeaky noises to pass the time, I wondered if I should call Megan back. I never liked wondering; every time I did I fell into my own land where it smelt like chocolate and strawberries. I walked over to my desk and lit a candle and started playing with the flame. Thinking there was no better time then now I called Megan.
“Hey I’m sorry about hanging up on you” Megan said apologetically.
“That’s okay, it’s my fault. I lied to you!”
“About what?” She asked in astonishment.
I had never lied to her before. We had been best friends for six years now and we have made a promise never to lie to each other.
“When you asked about my dads eyes, I avoided the question. But yes they were scratched out.”
“Well then maybe we should test this theory.” I could tell she was smiling and she had a plan.
“What are you going to do?”
“Call her!”
I stared at the ceiling mind drawn a blank. “You want to call her? As in say her name three times in a mirror?”
“Yep, and since its just a myth, as you said before, then nothing will happen to me.” She said happily.
I didn’t know what to say. I mean yes I did say that it was a myth, but my dad did die in the way that the myth says everyone dies. But then I thought about it, I had been the one to say her name three times in the mirror and nothing happened to me.
Still worried about what could happen I begged her, “Don’t say it!”
“I’m walking to the bathroom…”
“Don’t Megan!” I pleaded.
“I’m staring into the bathroom mirror…”
“Don’t do this!”
“Bloody Mary…” I could feel myself shiver with the sounds of her name. “Bloody Mary…” I wanted her to stop but I knew she wouldn’t even if I asked her too. “Bloody Mary.” I waited in silence.
“Megan? Are you okay?”
A short silence went past before Megan yelled into the phone and then burst out laughing.
“Nothings wrong with me, and I’m still alive. I’m pretty sure it was a stroke that killed your dad.”
“Fine, I have to go” I said tears forming in my eyes.
“Love you chicka!” Megan yelled, still laughing as I hung up.
I laid down on my soft covers and thought about what just happened. Maybe it was just me that was going crazy. Maybe only I was the one that though Bloody Mary could have been a possibility.
Before I knew it an hour had gone. I had fallen asleep again, but I was in a better mood. I could still smell the chocolate and strawberries. I rolled over and stared at my phone. I had gotten 4 missed calls from Jackie? Jackie was Megan’s mum and she always called me to talk about new books and movies that were coming out. She didn’t believe the internet was good for anyone. I called her back and she answered after just one ring.
“Something has happened to Megan!” She yelled.
