anastasia ramirez;
"ivanna, stop crying baby, please." i cried out to the two year old, in fact i was almost bawling out my own tears because she wouldn't stop crying.
it was the same thing over and over again.
i couldn't even take her to the local grocery store a few minutes down by our house because she'd try and reach things, using grabby hands to get them. sometimes she succeeded and placed them in the cart, sometimes she didn't and she fell. other times it was because she couldn't get something.
today was a mix of both of them.
she'd reached up and attempted to grab a packet of chocolate covered waffles, but had fallen and slid back down as soon as she'd dropped it into the basket. landing in a heap on the floor, soon followed by the deafening screaming and muffled cries she let out. poor baby.
i'd helped her up, dusted her up and placed her into my arms, covering her with thousands of kisses as if they were going to make her pain go away. i mean, she believed they did and they made her somewhat happier.
but even as we left the store she was still letting out muffled cries, so i made a mental note to check her out as soon as i could. she'd probably grazed a knee or something, the normal. she was always grazing her knees. she was adventurous after all; always climbing up things, crawling in and out of things, even running in and out of my sister's home. she just loved new places, exploring in general.
i grabbed the three plastic carrier bags and balanced them on my arm, ivanna still placed in my arm however and still giving out muffled cries - a little louder now.
i exited the store, making sure ivanna was secured on my arm before we exited. but the cries, damn they got louder. it wasn't until we reached the outside that she finally stopped, instead her cries turn to muffled laughter, then actual laughter.
i turned around, seeing a boy - a man even - not much older than me, stood there at the atm but instead of his attention drawn to the screen, it was drawn to ivanna. as soon as he grabbed the cash he walked over, a smile plastered onto his face.
"hey, cutie," he giggled towards ivanna, before his eyes locked on mine and he straightened up his posture, looking at me and giving a smile. "is she okay?"
he looked at me in a questioning manner, truly worried about my daughter.
maybe not every guy in the entire world was scared of children and ran away from them, *cough cough* aiden.
i nodded, shooting him a smile back, "she's fine, just a little shaken i think."
he nodded back, moving closer to both ivanna and i and sticking his tongue out a little more. "so you're the big sister, huh?" he chuckled, blind to the fact that i was her actual mother. "my siblings used to carry me around like that too."
i shook my head, giving a chuckle as i did so. "oh no." i responded, still laughing. "mother, actually."
"wait, she's yours?" he asked running a hand down the back of his neck.
shit, his expression had changed. and that is another man down.
"yeah."
"damn!" he exclaimed, his smile coming back before he gave a little chuckle, patting the top of ivanna's head. "she's so cute, i see where she gets it from!"
if i had a free hand at that moment i'd of put my hand to my heart in awe or probably pushed him in a joking manner and told him to shut up because it wasn't true. instead, i gave a smile and muttered back a 'thank you'.
ivanna and the boy were still exchanging funny faces, her smile lit up the world. it was kinda cute to watch, actually.
"well, we better get going baby, mase and char are waiting for us." i spoke out suddenly, causing the boy to walk back and pull a nervous face.
"damn, i'm sorry i won't keep you from the boyfriend any longer." he chuckled nervously, giving ivanna and tap on the nose before i cut him off, raising an eyebrow.
"boyfriend?" i chuckled, laughing.
"husband, damn." he responded instead, an even more nervous expression creeping upon his face.
damn, this boy.
"no, not at all." i chuckled. "none, actually."
he pulled a confused look, raising an eyebrow. "wait, so you're single? what?" he seemed almost in disbelief, causing me to laugh. "but your child?"
"long story." i laughed, watching as ivanna still interacted with the boy, tapping his own nose, poking at his cheeks. "but, yes i'm single."
"god damn." he mumbled under his breath, tapping ivanna's nose once more before he looked at me and extended his hand out.
"i'm sam, but call me sammy."
i nodded, finding a way to accept his hand and shake it. "anastasia, and this is ivanna."
"beautiful names, beautiful ladies." he mused, causing myself to giggle and to ivanna to copy me as she poked his cheek once more. "will i be seeing you around any more?"
"if you live around here, maybe." i smiled. he nodded, pointing into the opposite direction in which we had to walk. the bigger houses were up there, everyone owned fancy ass cars, were basically wealthy and usually lived in the spotlight of something.
"up there." he smiled, "so i guess you're from around here?"
"you got that!" i chuckled, finally grabbing the attention of ivanna. "so i'm running late and have to run but i'll catch you around, yeah?"
he nodded, before giving me a pointer finger indicating for me to stop as he grabbed a receipt from out of his pocket, tore a bit off it and wrote down a number.
"i'll catch you around." he spoke as he slid the paper into ivanna's hand and chuckled. "don't loose it and let her forget it, cutie."
and with that he disappeared into the grocery shop we walked out off and we both made our way back home.
