"You jerk face," Lizzie sighs as she comes to a stop beside me, and I give her an innocent look.
"Who, me? Just because I won?" I smirk, "Well, obviously." Lizzie slaps me on the arm and I flinch from the impact.
"So dudes," Louis starts, "Where in the world are we planning on going? It's going to take forever to get anywhere no matter what, so I say we start deciding." There are murmurs of agreement from everyone as we all walk outside to get into our car.
"We could go ice skating?" Liam suggests and Louis jumps at the idea.
"Yes! Yes, I, um, I totally agree with Liam, yes let us engage in the activity of Liam's suggestion," Louis stammers and we all just shake our heads and laugh.
"What about paintball?" Niall asks.
"Or, maybe just going for ice cream?" Harry says and we all sit and think.
"I'm down for just the ice cream, honestly," Zayn agrees with Harry and then Niall nods along.
"Yeah I don't think I really wanted to go to paintball honestly," Niall pauses, "Its too painful."
"That's just cause you're a pansy," I shoot his way, and he places his hand over his heart in a mock gesture of being offended but then we all just laugh.
"What about y'all?" Lizzie asks Louis and Liam, and they just share a look.
"Fine," Louis sighs.
"Ice skating is better when its also cold outside, anyways," Liam mutters playfully.
"So, to the ice cream parlor?" Paul asks from his drivers seat, and he earns a chorus of "yes"es from us.
As we travel the long winding road from our house to town, I'm reminded of home. Where I live, you have to drive ten minutes just to reach a convenience store, which isn't very convenient if I'm being honest. I sigh as I think about home. My horses and barn family, my band family from when I was enrolled in public school, and my time in marching band that I loved so dearly. It all seems so far away from me right now. I look around the cabin of the car and see Niall and Lizzie lost in their own little world with each other, and I smile. Louis, Liam, Zayn and Harry are all laughing about some inside joke that I assume happened a while ago. Suddenly a have this warm feeling of contentment just wash over me. As far as I am from home, as far away as I am from both my band and barn families, these five people are my friends. Not just my friends, but my brother, my childhood best friend, my possible boyfriend, and three new best friends that I have come across in such a short amount of time.
"Avery?" someone asks, and I jump.
"Uh, yeah?" I reply.
"Where did you go, girl? You were out," Louis laughs.
"I was just thinking," I smile looking at all of them, and Lizzie shoots me a weird look.
"Just thinking? You never do that," she jokes and I laugh along with her.
"What were you thinking about, Aves?" Zayn asks, and I smile.
"I was thinking about how I just feel so content with you all, and how I feel happy that I've found these five new people who already have come to mean so much to me in such a short amount of time," I tell them, and they all go quiet.
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Liam says, agreeing with me, "You guys do all mean a lot to me. Without you four I would never have been able to follow my dreams like I wanted. And you two, Lizzie and Avery, are two new bonus best friends, basically."
"I think that we all feel that way right now," Harry says from beside me, and we all nod in agreement.
"Look, I love you lads," Zayn starts, "but right now, I'm happiest about the fact that I've finally found my sister once more."
"Ditto," Louis says, "Not about the sister thing, obviously, because you aren't my sister, Avery. Not saying that you couldn't be, I mean, I love you like a sister, but I just, I meant ditto to the things about being grateful to have these six other people in my life right now who mean the absolute world to me."
I laugh at Louis basically digging himself a whole to climb out of when he first starts talking, but I know where he's coming from, and I understand. My band and barn family may be at home, but right here, I have a new family forming, and I love each of them dearly.
