Thump. Thump. Thump. Each heartbeat grew louder and louder as Emma inched her hand forward.
She looked around once.
The coast was clear. The aisle was still empty.
Just do it. Stop being such a chicken the devil in her ear whispered.
Shaking off the last bit of nervousness, Emma's hand clasped around the dangling necklace. It was gold and had a small swan pendant hanging from it's chain.
She shoved it in her front pocket and made a dash for the door.
As she was about to exit the small shop, she felt a tug at her arm.
With her heart caught in her chest, she froze.
"Relax," Someone whispered. She looked over her shoulder and saw Neal. With a sly grin, he took the necklace out of her pocket and ripped the tag off.
He gave her a gentle nudge out the door and followed her out.
"What were you thinking?!" He hissed once they were a safe distance away.
"Me, what about you? You could have gotten me caught!" Emma glared at him. She snatched the necklace away from him and returned it to her pocket.
"I just saved you." Neal argued.
"Whatever Neal, I don't remember asking for your help anyways." Emma turned away from him to head in the opposite direction.
With a sigh, Neal went after her.
"God Emma, must you be so difficult?" He asked as he fell into step beside her.
Emma shoved her hand in her coat pocket, rolling the swan between her fingers.
"So you're ignoring me?" Neal pestered on.
"Yes, Neal! Could you just go away already?" She rolled her eyes.
"Fine," Neal shrugged and crossed the street.
Cars honked in both directions; Brakes came to a screeching halt. Nevertheless, Neal managed to make it to the other side unharmed.
Emma let out a breath of relief.
He annoyed her constantly and was a thorn in her side, but she didn't want the guy to become road kill.
Neal caught her watching him and shot her a smug smile.
Shaking her head, she zipped up her jacket as the wind began to pick up and headed towards the train station.
While bouncing her left leg up and down and rubbing her hands together, Emma looked up at the train's schedule.
According to it, her train would be arriving in five minutes. She'd only have to suffer in this icy coldness for five more minutes.
She took out a small tube of lip balm and applied it to her almost-numb, chapped lips. The smell of bubble gum hit her nose as she rubbed her lips together.
With a content smile, she returned the tube to her pocket. The train could be heard coming up the tracks. A cold wave of air filled the area as it stopped. Slowly the doors opened and people rushed to exit as well to board the train.
Emma found an empty seat near the window and took it as the heat began to warm her.
"Ah," she sighed happily.
The doors shut and the train started up again. The train made two more stops.
An elderly woman took the unoccupied seat next to Emma.

FanfictionThis isn't exactly lovey-dovey, but I thought it was pretty cute. I wanted to turn this into a short series about young Emma + Neal, but I couldn't get past the first chapter and decided it could be a one shot story. This is my first one, so it may...
