"I'll help you pack for your trip." Hunter says, pitifully.
Why does he insist on helping me? It's not like I am physically incapable of packing one small suitcase for a 6 day trip.
"You really don't have to. I've got most of my stuff already." I argue.
Hunter smirks at me, while dragging out my large suitcase.
"I want to help you. And besides, even if you told me not to help you I would anyways because that's just the kind of person I am. You can't stop me from helping you, even if you want too."
I roll my eyes and lean my shoulder on the wall.
"Ok, if you really want to help there is one thing you can do if you don't mind. It's going to be pretty sunny in Louisiana and I have no sunscreen. Would you mind going to the dollar store to get me some to take with?" I lie.
Hunter immediately stands up and grabs his keys.
"I'll go if you need me too. What kind, spray or lotion?"
I look at him for a second.
"Any is fine."
Before I know it, he's out the door. I hurry up and gather 6 outfits into my suitcase so Hunter can't try to help me when he gets back. I pack a swimsuit, flip flops, tennis shoes, socks, etc. By the time Hunter gets back, I've finished packing.
"I noticed that your suitcase is kind of beaten up, so I bought you this one to use instead. Here, I'll switch everything out for you and I'll add the sunscreen." Hunter says, absentmindedly.
"Hunter you don't need to do that. Really, I got it." I try to take over but fail.
"Jess, let me help you. Your mom just died; it's the least I can do." Hunter says in his defense as he keeps switching my stuff.
"Now you're just being pitiful. I know how to pack my stuff." I say it very defensively but smile right after just to reassure him that I'm not angry with him.
Hunter stays silent for awhile.
"Do you want some coffee? I'm just finishing up, help yourself if you want."
I thought my first attempt at making sure Hunter knew I wasn't mad failed but this time I think it worked.
"Sure, you want me to make you some?" He asked politely.
I think about it for a second, but then realize I had 2 cups this morning.
"Oh thanks, but no. I've had way too much already. My body can't take it."
Hunter looks at me for a second, so I put on my 'convince him' face. I really don't want coffee right now.
"Okay, I'll be in the kitchen then." I convinced him.
I then pack some of my 'feminine products' while he's not in the room. (Hair brush, flat iron, hair ties, other stuff, etc...) I didn't want to pack them in front of him and I knew he wouldn't turn down a shot of espresso or some caffeine. I'm really not sure what he's going to make.
I zip my suitcase and leave it at the end of the sofa.
"Hey, I never thanked you for the suitcase. It's beautiful, really."
The suitcase had a hard plastic outside with pink and blue stripes. The handle was large and it could fit all my stuff in it so I didn't have to pay for an extra carry on. It really is a nice suitcase.
"I'm glad you like it." Hunter says with a large grin.NEXT MORNING HUNTER'S POV
____________________________"Hey Hunter, if you really want to help there is one thing you could do if it's not too much?" Jess asks.
"Name it?" I'm anxious now. She doesn't seem to like help.
"You could drive me to the airport? My flight is at 11:55 so if we leave now I could make it on time."
Uhhh... A few hours in a car alone with a girl as amazing as she is? Who on earth would turn that down? Did I just think that?
"I'd love to! Let me just get my phone and we can go."
I walk to Jess' bedroom where my phone is charging and put it in my pocket. When I walk back out, I see Jess with her large suitcase and immediately take it from her.
"I'll take it." I say as I try to slip out the door with it.
"Hey, I'm letting you take me to the airport. Don't push your luck, Mr.Hastohelpallthetime." She mocks me and takes the suitcase and runs out of the apartment building with it.
"Hey, no fair!" I laugh as I chase after her to my car, but she's already beaten me and has it in the backseat.
"Ok, you win this round. But you better look out next time, baby." I say, coolly. But did I just call her baby? What's happening to me?
"Oh, I don't know...you seem pretty sure of yourself. I'll have to up my game a bit more next time then." She says with those 'I'm so going to win' eyes.
"Ok well we need to get going so you don't miss your flight. I don't think your dad would be to happy if you didn't get there on time."
"My dad is too distracted with funeral stuff, probably. I'm hoping some of my relatives are taking his mind off it though. If they haven't, I'm going to have to come up with techniques of my own to distract him. Then again, he will probably try to do the same thing for me so what's the point." She's asking rhetorical questions now.
"Well it's really none of my business. You can always text me while you're there if you need any ideas or my input." I tell her.
"But that's the thing, none of my family even knows that we're seeing each other. They'd ask questions if they caught me texting you. They'd try to medal in the relationship, too. That's why I probably won't be able to do that." She says, head down with hands in her lap.
She said we're seeing each other. That they'd try to medal in the relationship. What does that mean? What are we? A couple, two friends, what?
"'Seeing each other?'" I quote.
"Yeah, I guess." We were silent for a few seconds.
"Do you want it to be more?" She asked.
It was so tempting to scream yes. I wanted to. But the question still hung in my head. What did she want me to say? I glanced at her to try to read her facial expression. She's trying to play it cool but I can tell she's anxious for an answer. Does she want me to say yes? I think she does; its playing on her face.
"Well I think the real question here is what do you want?" She's silent while she's thinks of what to say.
"I want you to answer my question." Jess says with a huge grin on her face.
Oh yeah, she wants it. It's so obvious now.
"I want it to be more. I really do." I say with a grin that's too big for my face.
It seems I have to wait an eternity for her answer. A lifetime almost. Then she she does.
"I would like that a lot." She says, reassuringly.
"So, is it official?" I've waited too long to ask.
"I guess so?" She says, the grin on her face is so adorable.
The angels are singing. "Hallelujah" is being sang. The audience is cheering. And my cell phone is ringing. It's my mom.
"Hey mom, what's up?"
"We haven't seen you in awhile. What's up with you?"
I pull the phone away from my ear.
"Should I tell her?" I whisper.
"Sure, if you're ready to go public tell anyone you want." She says, still grinning. How did I get so lucky in so little time?
"I think I will take that as a yes." I whisper, mic still covered.
I pull the phone back up to my ear.
"Well, a few interesting things happened today. Jess and I are dating now!" I say with almost too much enthusiasm. Jess giggles.
"That's great, honey!" She exclaims.
I can hear her telling my dad in the background. I can't quite hear his reaction.
"Your father is happy too. We need to meet Jess sometime soon. We'd like to get to know her. You seem to like her."
"I think we will have to set that up sometime. Not anytime this week though. Jess is going back home for her moms funeral today. I'm taking her to the airport."
"Awe, that's sad. Let her know we're sorry for her loss. Anyways, maybe we can go out to dinner sometime this weekend. When is she coming home?"
"She's coming back on Friday evening or Saturday morning. I'm not sure which is correct."
"Friday." Jess tells me.
"Oh mom, Jess said Friday. Maybe we can go Sunday? Would that work Jess?"
"That'd be great! I'd love to meet your mom and dad."
"Well mom, clear the calendar for Sunday then cause we're coming over."
"Alright, I'll look forward to it."
"As will we." I say as I hang up.
Jess and I are silent for a few minutes.
"We're about 20 miles away from the airport now Jess. It's only 8:30. How long do you think it'll take you to get through security?"
"I'm not sure how long it'll take. It can't take more than two hours."
"Oh, I was going to say maybe we can eat breakfast together in the airport but we won't get there in time for that. Maybe next time." I don't know why this is so disappointing for me.
Before I know it, we arrive at the airport. I try to get Jess' bag out from the back but she beats me to it.
"Told you I'd win." She says with a smirk.
"Hey, no fair! I was caught off guard."
"Well I don't know about you but that sounds like a personal problem to me." She says still smirking.
"Well, I'll go inside with you if nothing else." I say as I reach for the door handle to open the car door. I pull myself out and run after Jess, who is already inside the airport. How can she be so fast like that? Usually I'm the one no one can keep up with. I'm not used to running after other people. Usually other people have to run just to catch up with me and I can be pretty fast.
"Are you a runner?" I ask, gasping for air.
"Top runner of my class!" She exclaims, enthusiastically. She continues walking.
We walk around the airport for a few minutes.
"I really need to start getting through security now. I don't know how long it's going to take."
"Ok. Do you have your ticket?" I ask. Maybe she could've forgotten it.
"It's right here." She says, pulling the small piece of paper up for me to see.
"Good. Have a nice trip and be safe okay? Make sure to call me if you need anything. If you do I'll be there to help."
"Got it. And same goes for you, if you need anything don't hesitate to call. Promise?" She asks like she thinks I'll say no.
"Of course. You go on now. Have a good trip." I say as I lean in for a hug. Jess squeezes tightly, and as we start to pull away she gives me a short, unexpected kiss on the cheek and quickly leaves before I can react to it. What did that mean? It was amazing and it sent shocks through me, but what on Earth did it mean?
____________________________________HUNTER'S POV
On the way home, all I can think about is Jess and the kiss before she left. It sent waves through my body. I've never felt that way about anything before. Not even from kissing other girls. But I want more of it, I know that.
