Chapter 1 - Detention
Mr Stanford, my maths teacher, also known as the grumpiest teacher known to man is talking about trigonometry. I’m so bored listening to him dribble on. It’s not that I find trig hard it’s that I’ve already gone ahead and done this. So I start doodling in my book, it starts out as random squiggles and then turns into an amazing pattern. I look to my right and see Hayden bored out of his mind like I am.
“Hey” I whisper to him.
“Hey are you as bored as I am?” Hayden whispers to me.
“Yeah I am, have you done this yet? I have” I whisper to Hayden.
“I have too; do you wanna sit together at lunch?” Hayden whispers.
As I am about to answer him Mr Stanford interrupts.
“Ruby and Hayden, is there anything you would like to share with the class” Mr Stanford asks us.
“No Mr Stanford” we reply.
After we reply, he goes back to writing on the board and talking about trig formulas again.
“Yes, I’d like that” I whisper.
“What are you talking about?” he whispers.
“About sitting with you at lunch” I whisper to him.
“Oh” Hayden whispers.
“Ruby and Hayden that is it, I’ve had enough! You both have detention at lunch” Mr Stanford yells at us.
I think to myself how much I hate Mr Stanford but I don’t want to get in more trouble by talking to Hayden again. I know he’s thinking the same thing as he turns to me and rolls his eyes while the teacher’s not looking. Hayden and I have been friends since I moved here in grade six; now we’re in grade eleven, so we are extremely close and I originally thought that my feelings towards him were sisterly.
****** 2 Hours Later******
As I arrive at detention I see Hayden with his head in his hands looking very upset so I walk up to him and sit next to him. I get a piece of paper out of my book and scribble down;
“Are you ok?” I then pass it to him.
He hands it back to me after scribbling his reply;
“No I’m not my parents are going to kill me” I read.
I scribble down;
“My mum will kill me too” and hand it to Hayden again.
I see him madly scribbling something down on the piece of paper and hands it to me to read.
“We weren’t really doing anything wrong Mr Stanford is a really grumpy teacher, we just need to tell our parents that” I read.
I scribble back;
“Ok”
He scribbles;
“Do you want to have a movie night at my place, tonight?” (It’s Friday in this story)
I scribble;
“Am I choosing the movies this time?”
He writes;
“Yeah but only some J”
I write back;
“Chick flicks and Disney movies it is then J”
Hayden madly writes back;
“Yes to the Disney movies and only some chick flicks. I’ll get some comedies, horrors, and other scary movies”
I write back;
“NOOOOOOOOOOO!! You know I freak out during scary movies”
He chuckles lightly;
“YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!”
As I pass the piece of paper to Hayden, the bell signalling the end of lunch and our detention rings.
******After School******
As I walk through the door, I remember that I have to show my mum the detention slip and get her to sign it. I see my mum, she says hi to me and I say hi back
“Mum can you please sign this?” I say as I hand her the slip. She sees what it is.
“What did you do to get this?” she asks me.
“Mr Stanford saw Hayden and I whispering and he got really cross. We started whispering again and he got mad. He told us we had a detention even though nearly everyone else wasn’t paying attention. Before you ask we had already gone and done all the work for that lesson” I explain to my mum.
“Ok but, you still shouldn’t have been talking to each other” Mum scolds me.
“Mr Stanford is a really grumpy teacher” I reply.
“Since what you did wasn’t really wrong, I won’t punish you” Mum tells me. I hug my Mum extremely happy she didn’t punish me.
“Thanks Mum, Can I go over to Hayden’s house for a movie night?” I ask.
“Has Hayden’s parents said yes?” Mum asks.
“They have, so can I?” I say.
“Yes you can, go pack now” my mum playfully orders me.
As I get to my room, I look in my closet for something to wear. I look at my clothes no sure what to wear and after twenty minutes of staring at it I just settle for track-pants, jacket and a graphic t-shirt. Happy with the clothes I picked out I pack the other things I need in a backpack and pick out my favourite pair of purple high-tops. I find mum to tell her I’m ready to go and we get in the car to drive over to Hayden’s place. I start texting him as we pull out of the driveway and this is how the conversation went;
Me: “hey, I’m on my way. Did you get in trouble about the detention?”
Hayden: “no I didn’t, did you?”
Me: “nope only a slight warning but mum understands we were just bored”
Hayden: “we should do that again!”
I laugh really hard after I read the last text.
“Who are you texting?” my mum asks, I can tell she’s extremely curious.
“Hayden” I reply.
“Oh, ok” She says. I text Hayden back after that weird conversation;
Me: “NOOOOOOOOOO!! I don’t want another one on my permanent record!”
Hayden: “buzz kill”
Me: “if it wasn’t for me you would have so many more detentions on your permanent record”
Hayden: “you’re right but you are still a buzz kill”
Me: “am not”
Hayden: “are too”
Me: “am not”
Hayden: “are too”
Me: “am not!”
Hayden: “are too!”
Me: “FINNNNNE! I am”
Hayden: “VICTORY!”
I start laughing really hard at that last one.
“You still texting Hayden?” mum asks.
“Mhmm” I reply.
Me: “gotta go, nearly at your place”
Hayden: “alright, see you in a little bit”
