Chapter 4: Hospital visit

After what feels like forever we arrive at the hospital and the paramedics wheel me out with the boys walking beside me. My mum and James are in the emergency area already and they run up to me.

“Are you ok, sissy?” James asks with worry clear on his face.

“Not really, buddy but I will be when the Doc takes a look at me” I reply.

“Ok” he says with a smile on his face again.

My name gets called out to go into one of the doctor’s offices.

“I have to go see the Doc buddy, why don’t you go play with B and H” I say smiling.

“Ok” he replies excitedly, only now just realising that Brent and Hayden are here.

He runs off as someone wheels me in with mum walking beside me. I get in the room and I see a middle aged man with a name badge which says that his name is Dr Cronan. He introduces himself to mum and I.

“How is that leg of yours Ruby?” Dr Cronan asks.

“Really sore” I say.

“How did it happen” he asks.

“I was climbing a tree and as I came down my clothes go stuck on the lowest branch and as I was trying to free myself I fell and landed on my left leg first” I say while he writes it all down.

“Well let’s get that leg of yours x-rayed and we’ll get you a wheel chair for the moment” he says.

He talks into his radio to get a wheelchair for me. After a few minutes a male nurse comes in with the wheelchair and another nurse follows him in. the first nurse picks me up carefully while the other nurse cradles my leg. They get me into the wheelchair to wheel me off to be x-rayed. They x-ray my leg and give me the x-ray to take back to Dr Cronan. He takes a look at the x-ray and gets me to wait in a different waiting room to be plastered. I finally get called in after already waiting quite a few hours and being really tired.

“You had quite a fall, didn’t you?” the nurse asks while plastering my leg.

I’m really uncomfortably as my leg is still sore but is feeling better since they gave me pain killers and the doctor gave me a bottle of pills to use at home.

“Yeah I did” I say.

“I’ll be done soon” she says sensing how tired I am.

It is almost ten and these painkillers are making me drowsy. She’s finally done and mum wheels me to where everyone else is waiting. The first thing I see is my seven year old brother curled up on Brent with him looking incredibly tired and Hayden looking in the same position as Brent. Hayden sees me and runs over to me. Brent is a little slower as he readjusts James in his arms so he can still sleep and so that Brent can get up to walk to me.

“How long has he been asleep?” I ask directing my question to Brent.

“A few hours, he was determined to stay awake but he was just exhausted so I said I would wake him when you came out. I don’t want to now because it’s so late” He says.

We walk out to the car and all get in. My mum had asked the boys if they wanted to stay the night with us since it was so late and they were fine with that and said they texted their parents already. When we get home Hayden helps me through the door and carries me upstairs to my bedroom and mum comes up to help me into the shower and my pyjamas. She leaves and I remember that neither he nor Brent has pyjamas.

“How about you get out your pyjamas from the bottom draw of my dressing table and a pair for Brent, I think that I saw him go into James’ room to tuck him in to bed” I suggest.

“Ok” he says.

“Take me with you so I can say goodnight to James” I say and he grabs the handles of my wheelchair.

We arrive in James’ room and we find that mum is also in there about to say goodnight. Hayden chucks the pyjamas at Brent he catches them and walks off to go change after he says goodnight to James.

“Night, sweet dreams” I say and then kiss his forehead.

“Night” he says and not long after he’s fast asleep again.

When Brent comes back we all creep out of James’ room and go into my room.

“You two can sleep in here and I trust that there won’t be any funny business” Mum says in a warning tone.

“I’ll make up some mattresses for you” she says and walks out of the room.

Brent helps me into my bed while Hayden pulls the sheets down and then pulls them up when I’m settled. Mum comes back a few minutes later with mattresses, sheets and other things. She sets about setting the mattresses up and both boys help.

“Goodnight” she says.

“Night” we all reply.

When mum is gone we say our goodnights to each other.

“Night, R” Brent says.

“Night, B” I say back.

“Night, R” Hayden says.

“Night, H” I say.

“Night, B” Hayden says.

“Night, H” Brent says.

We all fall straight asleep after that. I feel like my life is almost perfect now. I have my two best guy friends with me and I feel like nothing can hurt me while these two are with me.
