Chapter 3

My Mac book bleeped at me and a pop up window appeared on my screen. It said, video call, do you accept? I accepted the call and a hideous face with scowling; glowing red eyes and puss filled spots ready to burst covered its face like a mountain range.

I heard his breath rasping over the microphone.

“Nya, I wondered how you would get the message when I killed your servants. It’s strange really, I would have thought you would of sent people that are more of a challenge. You just made me kill a fair amount of the British army and i didn't like doing it. Although i did enjoy sapping all their energy. So when I see you, the energy they gave me will help to slash you to ribbons. I will stop you from bringing the end of the world to our door step. I don’t know about you but I’m not too keen on dying just yet.”

A smile flashed across Nya’s face and it leaned into the camera, “Shade. I doubt you have the skill or the power to kill me. Give me a paper cut maybe, but no, not kill me. I will make all of humanity suffer and the sorcerer’s can do nothing about it.”

With those words it signed off and left me nervous of what was to come.

To stop anyone interrupting Light and I, the shadows around the room expanded and blocked the door and windows. This barrier could withstand anything for at least twenty four hours. As the final strands of shadow settled I flicked the light switch and waited for Light to appear. The tea was steeping in the pot and the biscuits set on the table.

A sudden sigh and Light pops up behind me. He grabs a custard cream and sits down opposite me on the sofa.

“So, what is the plan for now?” I said, looking at the doubt that spread across the face of my oldest friend.

“To be honest Shade I don’t have a clue. The headless are cleaning up the bodies from the drill square and making sure there were no traces of you or the soldiers at the scene.” He moved his leg showing the scarring that covered all his body except his head.

This scarring was given to him when he was tortured to within an inch of his life every day for two years. I wasn’t the man I am now. It was my job to inflict those terrible wounds years ago but to this day Light never saw his captors. I deeply regret doing it and have spent the rest of my life repenting for my actions.

Light brushed the biggest scar at the base of his left leg that I knew ran the whole length of his body, ending with a spiral at the top of his chest. I gave him a few minutes to remember the pain and suffering I caused.

“We need to ask Joanna Night to help us find Nya. She has the best chance of learning where Nya is. It will be careful of humans and so if we send a Telepathic Shifter they would have the best chance of success.” Light said picking up one more custard cream

By this point Light had consumed most of the biscuits and so I sent him away with a flick of my wrist and called Joanna.

“Jo, I appreciate the difficulty of the situation I am putting you in but we need to find Nya, do you know any rumours about where it is or where it’s been?” I tapped out a rhythm on the desk as I listened to her trying to tell me that she knows nothing.

“Jo, Get here now or I will get Light to come and collect you.” I hung up and sighed.

By the time I had sorted out the paper work and taught the new recruits how to shoot Joanna had arrived. As per usual she arrived in style, a brand new Lamborghini LP670-SV Superveloce roared up to the main gate, a stunning lady climbed out of the car and handed the keys to one of the soldiers who saluted her and drove the car to a parking space.

She turned to me and smiled as she walked over to join me. I turned back to the soldiers marching on the parade square. Once she had joined me I walked towards my office, I had no need to look behind me and check if Jo was following because I could hear her high heels clicking as she walked purposefully, with grace and in silence.

In my office I placed my hat on the desk and turned to face Jo who had closed the door behind her, I waved my hand and once more the door turned black with the shadows. She sighed and sat down. I nodded at her to start the hunt for Nya. Her eyes locked with mine quickly before they closed. She sighed and then energy started to gather in the room. I could feel it, a buzzing sensation as the room filled with something that I could, if needed, tap into and use it to aid my shadows in becoming stronger and more controllable.

Her hair lifted expanded as if she had rubbed it against a balloon, I heard some crackles and blue streaks raced across her hair. The room was slowly filling with magical energy and the buzzing sensation was getting bigger and bigger. The blue streaks spread over her face, concentrating on her eyes.

Jo flung out her arms as if to embrace someone and the magical energy flowed into her from around the room. I was so fixated by this impressive display of energy gathering that I failed to notice who else had appeared to watch the show.

“Wow, I have never seen anything like this. I feel like I’ve been teleporting for about four hours without stopping.” Light shivered as Jo started to take some of his energy.

Jo drew in her hands and then her eyes flew open. The violet that normally coloured her eyes was gone; instead the whole of her eye was the deepest blue. I knew now that she was no longer in the room, I could sense her mind expanding like a bubble as she searched for Nya. She sifted through the country looking for the telltale signs of magicians for their minds were surrounded by walls to stop others spying on them. Not that this would stop Jo.

She expertly slipped through people’s defences like water through a sieve. Until she found a huge impenetrable barrier around someone’s mind. Sensing victory she attacked with the wrath of a hurricane in an attempt of opening a crack in the barrier that she could slip through and discover the identity of the person whose mind she invaded, but to no avail.

She could find no way of getting past the defence, no hand hold or slight crack anywhere. This magician was well trained. A smile crept across her face as she felt the magician reach out with his own mind to establish who had mentally attacked them. She slipped past the mental probe and into the hole it had come from. Then she sifted through the memories of the person until she found one where the person was spoken to. Its name was spoken in the memory and Jo had found her mark. Nya had been found.

Jo looked at me with blue flashes still flickering across her eyes. “I found it. Nya is hiding in…”

Jo’s eyes rolled back and she collapsed without revealing where she had found it. I jumped to my feet and began to feed Jo with some of my energy in an attempt to bring her round. Her eyes fluttered as if she was stirring from sleep. A small groan escaped her lips as she sat up. She looked weak and sickly so I sent for the doctor.

When the doctor had finished and her energy levels were back to a stable level I started to think about what could have caused this to happen. There was no sign of illness or ailment that could have affected her.

The only thing I could think of was that Nya somehow severed the connection between her and the flow of energy that all sorcerers use to keep them topped up and able to use their skills
