Openness

Openness especially toexperience: Inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious.

- Appreciation for art
 - emotion

 - adventure

 - unusual ideas

 - curiosity

 - and variety of experience.

Openness reflects the degree of intellectualcuriosity, creativity and a preference for novelty and variety a person has. Itis also described as the extent to which a person is imaginative orindependent, and depicts a personal preference for a variety of activities overa strict routine.

Some disagreement remains about how to interpret the opennessfactor, which is sometimes called "intellect" rather than openness toexperience.

A particular individual, however, may have a high overall opennessscore and be interested in learning and exploring new cultures but have nogreat interest in art or poetry. There is a strong connection between liberalethics and openness to experience such as support for policies endorsing racialtolerance.

Another characteristic of the open cognitive style is afacility for thinking in symbols and abstractions far removed from concreteexperience. People with low scores on openness tend to have more conventional, traditional interests. They prefer the plain, straightforward, and obvious overthe complex, ambiguous, and subtle. They may regard the arts and sciences withsuspicion or view these endeavors as uninteresting. Closed people preferfamiliarity over novelty; they are conservative and resistant to change.
