Just a few more steps. She could see a shadowy spot ahead, and shadows meant safety. The young woman reached the dark alcove and retreated into its dark embrace. She looked around to see if she was still being followed. No, it appeared as though she had lost them. She was about to step back out onto the sidewalk when she saw a car turn the corner down the street and head toward her. She remained in the shadow and strained to see if it was the same vehicle. Yes, it was the same car...the same two men.

The woman hunkered down behind a trashcan and hid the best that she could. She could hear the sound of the car engine growing louder as it approached. At one point, she knew the car was passing her very hiding spot. For a moment, the car slowed to an idle, and the woman held her breath, afraid that the beating of her heart would give her away. But the engine revved to life again, and the car continued on down the street.

The woman gave herself a moment to still her racing heart and collect her courage to continue on. Eventually, she peeked around the trashcan. Seeing an empty patch of street, she slowly ventured from her hiding place and carefully scanned the street in both directions. The street was eerily quiet and empty, but at the same time, it was a welcome sight. She had lost them.
