ONE YEAR LATER
"Are you sure I look okay?" I asked Zoe, who handed me my flowers.
"Of course you do. Your dress is beautiful, your hair looks perfect and you can thank Alexis's cousin for your fantastic makeup." She responded as I took the flowers out of her hand. "Alright, are we ready to go?"
I fixed my hair one more time in the mirror outside the church before nodding. Zoe grinned widely and stuck her head through the church doors, giving the pianist a thumbs up. He nodded back at her and began playing some traditional wedding song Alexis had picked out. She was sure to have every detail perfect, despite everyone's protests that it would be beautiful no matter what. I patted Rae on the back and she smiled at me before walking down the aisle, dropping flower petal all over the floor along with Alexis's little cousin. Everyone cooed at them as they walked, their dresses fluffed out around them, wide smiles on their faces. Rae had just lost her two front teeth at the same time. Not the best timing in the world, but the look on her face when she came up to show me them made up for it. When she was halfway down the aisle, Zoe grinned at me once again and began walking. Rae had made her way down the aisle and was now hiding behind Luke's leg, just now noticing everyone staring at her. They had grown incredibly close over the last year and she now relied on him to play with her. He was particularly good at tea parties.
Michael met Zoe half way, and both of their faces lit up as they walked down the remainder of the aisle together. Once they reached the end, they parted and went to their respective sides. I took a deep breath, the corset in my dress making it slightly more difficult and began walking. I knew I looked nervous, but the minute I locked eyes with Luke, his easy smile calmed me down and I began smiling too. My hands were sweating around the stems of the flowers, but I didn't notice it if I just looked at him. I found the courage to look over at everyone sitting in the seats of the church and caught Zoe's mom, Carol's eye. She had Dahlia on her knee, who was passed out against her chest. Sam had Jon, or Jace as he liked to call him, since his initials were JC. I looked over at Luke again and he passed Rae over to Michael, who she clung to quickly, and stepped out to take my arm when I was halfway. We walked in silence to the end of the aisle... and parted, just as Michael and Zoe had done moments before. I stood beside Zoe and watched the door as Alexis emerged, her hand in the nook of her father's arm. She looked stunning. Her dress had been incredibly expensive and she had blown half of the money she had been saving to pay off her student loans on it, but now it looked worth it. She had small white flowers entangled in her hair, which was pulled up and off of her face. Her natural hair helped keep them in place much better than it would if it had been straightened.
She made her way down the aisle with her dad and Niall stepped out when they reached the end. He shook her dad's hand, she kissed his cheek and Niall took her arm, leading her to the front of the church. The bishop cleared his throat before speaking. It was a long and tedious speech, but neither of them seemed to mind. She was looking up at him with so much happiness in her eyes, even I couldn't get bored looking at them.
The ceremony was long and traditional, just as she had wanted it, but the vows were handwritten. Niall had to use cue cards to remember all of his, which was six cards long and out of order. Alexis had hers memorized, in true Alexis fashion, and made everyone cry. Or at least, Zoe and I were crying. When they finally kissed, I felt as if I were at a concert the cheers were that deafening. Niall even went as far as dipping her as long as he could without dropping her flat on her back, and she let everyone know it hadn't been done at the rehearsal by her squeak of shock. It was all incredibly beautiful, especially because of the light flooding in through the stain glass windows and I had never seen my friend look so happy.
