Chapter 7
“You told him what?” Luke asked, his voice shocked and leaking with disbelief. He didn’t exactly sound angry, but I had a feeling that if I kept talking, he was going to be.
“I know, I know, and I’m sorry. I was freaking out and I panicked.” I apologized. “But what did he think was going to happen? He told me he went to rehab and I was going to throw myself into his arms and say ‘Oh, father, I missed you dearly! Please, take me back to the house that I now only have bad memories from, leave my boyfriend and father of my children, and let you help raise them even though there is still a risk of you losing your mind again?’ I don’t think so.”
“Well, you didn’t have to tell him that we were getting married.” He pointed out. I turned to him and sighed before going over to the bed and laying back, fisting my hair in my hands. I felt him lean back as well, then adjust himself so that he was leaning on his arm on his side. I looked over at him and he was just staring at me, no emotion on his face. I raised my eyebrow at him, waiting for him to speak. “You do know that we have to get married now, don’t you?”
I sat up abruptly. No, we didn’t. I thought he was just mad I had lied to my dad. He was always on my case for never speaking to him, not wanting my relationship to be like his and his father’s. He wanted me to forgive him and rebuild our relationship. I thought he was just upset that the first thing I said to him in nearly a year was a lie. “Why do we have to do that?” I snapped, demanding an answer.
“You told him people were going to try and take away his kid. You didn’t think he wouldn’t take us to court for that? He’s going to realize that you don’t have a fucking ring on your finger and use your lie to his advantage.”
He was fuming now, which wasn’t very surprising. I would be angry if I were in his position as well. I opened my mouth to say some kind of retort, when the bedroom door opened, revealing Michael holding a very upset Dahlia. He had been over when I came home and we had put him on baby duty while I told Luke about what had happened. He looked incredibly stressed out, most likely due to the crying baby in his arms.
“Hi, guys, I can hear you both screaming at each other so I know that it’s a shitty time, oh fuck, I didn’t mean to swear in front of the baby, oh no, shit, wait,” he took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. I hadn’t realized that we were screaming at each other. That was probably what made her cry in the first place. “Can you guys just take your children, please? I’m not their father, I can’t do this. They are your problem, Luke, deal with your daughter!”
He was obviously stressed out. Luke sighed loudly before walking over and taking the baby, giving Michael a glare for allowing his daughter to cry, before shushing and rocking her back and forth. She kept crying however and faintly, I heard Jon start crying as well, not very surprisingly. Whenever Dahlia cried, she triggered her brother. Then it occurred to me that he was alone.
“Michael,” I said very slowly. “Did you leave my barely two month old son alone?”
He looked off in the distance as if he were having a vision like in fucking That’s So Raven. “Oh fuck. Hang on.”
I sighed loudly, pinching the bridge of my nose as Dahlia continued crying. I could hear Luke cooing to her in an attempt to get her to stop crying, saying things like, “It’s okay, baby girl, daddy’s sorry he yelled,” and “Shh, it’s okay, princess, everything’s alright.” I ran a hand through my hair once again before walking over to Luke.
“Here, just give her to me.” I said, holding my arms out.
“No, it’s fine, I got it.” he assured me, anger still evident in his voice. If he was going to be so upset, I did not feel comfortable at all with him holding the baby.
