The next morning, I sat by the window and watched the sun greet the day in an array of colors.  There was a knock at my door soon after the sun was fully up over the horizon.

“Good morning, Jeremiah,” I called.  He came in, a grin on his face.

“Using your psychic powers on me?”

“No.  Nobody else would have knocked on my door this early.  You know that I have always gotten up early enough to watch the sunrise.  I expect you watched for it to finish rising then came to fetch me.”

“Spot on, as usual,” he informed me.  “Ready for breakfast?”

“Sure am.  Are we going to head out right after?”

“Naturally.  You have someplace you want to go and I want to get back to my family.”

“Let’s go eat, then.”  I collected my bag from the foot of the bed and we left.  Jeremiah took my key from me and turned both of them in at the front desk.  After finding out where a good place for breakfast was, we left the inn.  Jeremiah led the way to the place the innkeeper had suggested and we bought breakfast.  This place had tables to sit inside to eat, more like a diner than the usual stands in this province.

“Jeremiah, can I ask you a question?” I asked between bites.

“Always.”

“How do you handle Amelia being placed in dangerous situations?”

“She was a spy and assassin before I met her.  I know that she can handle herself.  I don’t like it but if I were to try to keep her out of harm, I’d be a hindrance in our work.  I guess what it really boils down to, though, is trust.”

“What does trust have to do with it?”

“I trust her to be able to take care of herself.  We have a deal, too.  If she’s not back by a certain point in time, I have free reign to be a protective husband and go after her.”

“Have you ever done it?”

“Twice in our entire marriage.  If you’re thinking about that Christopher lad, I’m sure he’s just as capable as you are.  He was the leader of a band before you came along.  And if he’s gone you can always keep an eye on him.”  He tapped his forefinger against my temple.

“Thanks, Jeremiah.”

“Anytime, Fey.  I take it, you’re going back now?”

“It’s time to.  Thank you for helping me.”

“It was no problem.  I would have liked to gut the guy myself.  Promise me something.”
