BEEP BEEP BEEP. I awoke to the sound of the smoke alarm, along with the smell of something burning. I sat up in my bed and quickly out of my bedroom in the living room.
"Anyone home?!" I yelled.
"In here Madden!" I heard my dad call, from what sounded like the kitchen.
I walked to the kitchen cautiously, to find my dad over by the stove with smoke everywhere.
He looked back at me and smiled. "Breakfast is ready."
I laughed a little. "You're such a dork. Here's an idea; let's go OUT to eat," I said looking unpleasantly at the sad attempt Dad had made at making breakfast himself for once.
“Good call,” he replied, looking sadly at the charred pancakes on the stovetop.
“I’ll be ready in 15 minutes,” I said turning around to go upstairs.
“Okay,” Dad said starting to clean up the mess he had made.
I paused and turned back around. “Oh, and Dad?”
“Yeah?” he asked looking back at me.
“Don’t call me Madden,” I said smiling.
He laughed then replied, “Alright, fine. See you in 10, MJ.”
I sighed and walked back to my bedroom. I sat down and brushed my long blonde hair. I looked in the mirror and sighed at my slightly curly hair. I’ve always wanted naturally straight hair. I then walked to my dresser and put on a jean miniskirt and bright pink tank top. I put on pink eye shadow, mascara, a little eyeliner, and light pink lip gloss. I looked in the mirror and frowned. I never think I look good enough.
“MJ, are you almost ready!?” I heard dad yell.
“Yeah, I’m coming!” I yelled back. I got up and met him at the front door.
We left the house and got into the car.
“So, where do you wanna go, Kiddo?”
“How about Denny’s?” I asked.
“Sure, Denny’s it is,” he replied, pulling out of the driveway.
The rest of the car ride was almost silent. My dad isn’t really the talkative type, even around me.
We pulled into the Denny’s parking lot and he turned off the car. We walked inside, me trailing behind him. We got a booth seat, like always, and a tall man with dark brown hair and green eyes came over to our table.
“Hi, my name is Tyler and I will be your waiter this morning. Can I get you guys anything to drink?” He asked, looking first at my dad then at me.
“Uh, ya,” I said. “I’ll have Dr. Pepper. No ice, please,”
He scribbled something down on his note pad and turned to my dad. “And for you, Sir?”
“I’ll have the same please,” he replied.
He scribbling something else down and said, “Alright, I’ll go get those for you,”
He walked away and my dad watched to make sure he was out of sight before saying, “Hey, MJ, what do you think of that waiter? Pretty cute, eh?” he asked.
“Dad, he’s like 23 or something. And he’s totally not my type,” I replied.
“How do you know that?” he asked.
“Just do,” I replied.
“Oh. Okay then. Sooorrrry,” he said sarcastically.
I rolled my eyes at him and he smiled.
I looked up and around the restaurant. My eyes came to a hault and my heart skipped a beat when I saw this girl from my school. I hate seeing people who aren’t my friends outside of school, especially when I’m with my dad. Even though no one would care, it still just bothers me.
The girl’s name is something like Jamie, or Janice? I’m not sure. I’ve only seen her a couple of times. She’s not one of the more popular people. She is well known, but only because she gets made fun of a lot. She’s the only out lesbian in my school. I know that has got to be hard on her, but I’ve never gotten up the courage to stand up for people like her.
As I look at her though, I realize she’s really pretty. Even without makeup. Looking at her makes me jealous, and there isn’t any feeling I hate more. No, I take that back. The one feeling I hate more is being jealous, but not being able to do a damn thing about it…
