"Hey Matt." Scott said to his co-worker as he got to his desk.

"Hey Scott. How are you?" Matt looked up from his computer and leaned back in his chair.

"I'm fine." Scott leaned against Matt's cubical, "How is your little girl?"

"She just started kindergarten today. I feel old."

"You're not old. She's just growing up, man. It'll get a lot worse, I'm sure." Scott laughed but Matt just rolled his eyes.

"I think she's coming in today. It's my week so I asked for her to be dropped off here before I head home."

"Let me know when she gets here. I wanna say hi."

"Will do."

Scott walked to his cubical on the other side of the room. He sat down in his chair and unlocked his computer, smiling at the background. It was a photo of him and his best friend, Alex. Alex would be at the salon right now, probably telling an older woman about how much of an idol Carrie Underwood is.

                                    ****

It got to 7 o'clock and Scott started to feel his brain turn to mush as he shut down his computer. He looked up as the stations door opened and a little girl yelled "Daddy!" and Matt got up from his seat.

"Hi princess." Matt said in return as he kissed his daughter's cheek. Scott got up and walked over to them, noticing Matt's ex. Matt recently got divorced, even though he loved who he was married to. Scott remembers a broken Matt showing up to his house one night because his husband decided he had had enough.

Matt sometimes came home too late with alcohol on his breath and cum stains on his jeans, meaning he got too out of control and cheated again. The night would end with Matt trying to cuddle with his partner, but just making him more uncomfortable.

"Hey Rose, you remember Scott don't you?" Matt asked his daughter.

"Of course, Daddy." Rose smiled at Scott and gave him a small wave.

"How was your first day of kindergarten?" Matt asked Rose as he continued to hold her in his arms.

"It was fun! Mama dropped me off and another little girl came right up to me and invited me to be her friend."

"That's wonderful, sweetie. I'm really glad it went well." Matt looked to his ex (Scott was still unsure of his name) and they made serious eye contact before Matt asked, "Hey Scott. Can you take Rose to the break room and get her a donut? I'm sure there's one left." Scott nodded and Matt handed Rose over to him.

Scott looked back and saw Matt speaking to his ex.

"Here you go, Rose. The last donut we have." Scott handed Rose a chocolate donut with sprinkles on top.

"Thank you, Scott! It looks delicious." Scott sat beside Rose at the break room table. He was curious about Matt's ex.

"Hey Rose. What is your dad's name?" Rose looked up at Scott as she chewed the first bite of her donut.

"Matt." She said as she swallowed.

"No. Not Matt. Your other dad."

"You mean my mama? Her name is...." She paused to think, "Mi? Mimi? Something like that. I'm not sure because I call my parents daddy and mama. You'd have to ask daddy for sure."

"I thought daddy was...I thought daddy had a husband?" Scott got increasingly more confused.

"Nope! Just mama." Rose continued to eat her donut as Scott sat silent.

Scott eventually got up and walked to the door, leaning against the wall. Matt and...Mimi(?) were talking but Mimi seemed to have her arms folded across her chest. Then they both started walking towards Scott who then went back to sitting beside Rose, who had finished her donut.

"Rose, honey." Mimi started as she kneeled in front of Rose, "Mama has to go now, okay? Be good for daddy this week and have fun at school. I'll see you soon." Rose hugged Mimi and then she stood up.

Scott got a good look at her. She looked young, much too young to have a four year old child. She had swooped bangs going to the left side of her tan face. She had dark brown hair that matched her dark brown eyes. She was absolutely beautiful.

"Call me on Friday." Mimi said to Matt, who nodded, before leaving.

"Rose, do you want some chocolate milk?" Matt asked.

"Yes! I really want some daddy."

"Alright. Go wait by daddy's desk, okay?" Rose nodded and did as Matt asked, "We've been divorced for about 6 months now and I'm still not over it. Even though it's my fault. I wish I could move on, but I mean, just look at what I lost."

"Matt?" Matt looked at Scott with a questioning look on his face, "I thought you had a husband? Rose calls her mama and says that you don't have a husband and basically saying that Mimi is a woman. Is she? I'm just asking because I remember you telling me-"

"I did marry a man, Scott. But as the years went on, Mimi realized who she truly was. A woman."

"Oh. Okay. I was just making sure. I know you're upset that you lost her, Matt, but there isn't really anything you can do."

"Yeah. I know." Scott followed Matt out to his cubical where Rose was spinning in his chair, "Ready to go get some chocolate milk?"

"Yes, yes, yes!" Rose jumped down from the chair and Matt picked her up in his arms.

"I'll see ya tomorrow, Scott." Scott nodded as they walked out of the station.

Scott walked back to his desk and sat down in his chair. He thought about Mimi and how beautiful she is. But that's his friends ex. He could never be with her.
