"mike, wake up. we fell asleep." luke mumbles shaking michael softly as he jolts awake and looks at luke wide eyed, "what time is it luke?!" luke sighs and rubs his eyes, "two in the morning."

michael feels his heart begin to race, "shit. luke i have to go. my parents are going to be pissed. can you bring my clothes to school tomorrow?" luke nods and says goodbye to michael who quickly runs up the stairs and out the front door after grabbing his bag and shoes.

michael runs through the still damp ground barefooted, not wanting to waste time by slipping on his converse. he walks through the quiet streets and shivers at the cold wind, quickening his pace.

when he reaches his street he runs to his front door. he tries the lock and much to his dismay, it won't budge. michael sighs and runs a hand through his dyed hair, trying to think of another way into the house.

a thought finally hits him as he makes his way to the side of the house. he looks up at his window on the second floor and gulps. he glances at the tall tree at his right and takes one last look up. he would rather fall out of this tree than make his parents mad.

he makes his way to the tree and grabs onto the sturdy branches, slipping his foot into one of the gaps and pulling himself off the ground and further into the tree.

michael looks above his head and takes another step up, pulling himself a bit higher off the ground and swallowing the lump in his throat. he wasn't that high off the ground yet, but looking down made the boy more nervous than he already way.

michael took his sweet time scaling the tree and eventually made it to the level of his bedroom window. he took another peak down and instantly regretted it. he reached as far as he could to reach the window but it was just a little bit out of his reach.

he sits there disappointed until he hears a crack. at this point, michael is trying to stay calm despite the fact the old tree is cracking under his weight. although with a seconds more thought, he considers letting the tree fall with him.

he breaks off a branch and reaches for his window again, this time successfully opening the window. he smiles to himself, hearing another slight crack before climbing out onto the limb and deciding to jump.

michael jumps, without any second thought, and grabs the siding of his house, pulling up and heaving himself into the place he called his room.

he sighs, wiping the cold sweat from his brow and texting luke that he made it home before locking his door and climbing into his warm bed, shutting out the sounds of the drunken arguments just down the hall.

when michael awoke, sunlight was seeping through the blinds. "shit." michael mumbles, scrambling out of bed and throwing on a pair of jeans and a teeshirt. he slips on his converse and bracelets and grabs his bag, running out the door.

he checks the time and realizes that he has about five minutes before the bus comes. he sighs in relief, absolutely not wanting to have to call luke for a ride after their brief argument last night.

the loud yellow bus slowed to a stop near his house as he walked onto the bus, pausing to say hello to the driver. he walked down the narrow aisle, ignoring the snicker from the kids in the front.

"um, michael do you want to sit next to me?" a voice piped up from his right. michael thinks he is dreaming when he turns face to face with delilah olivers. "m-me?" he asks softly and she smiles brightly at him, "who else?"

michael found it crazy how one girl could have so much control over his feelings. just hearing her sweet voice mutter his name made him feel like the luckiest boy in the world.
