Chapter One: The Beginning
I was frightened. Frightened, because it would be the end of the summer in a few short weeks. Frightened, because at the end of summer I would be moving out of my small town home in Florida to California, where I am being forced into attending the best boarding school in the country, and living all by myself, in a dorm, with a roommate I don’t even know.
The thought of moving away from under my parents shielding wings terrified me more than anything. My parents reassured me that there was nothing to fear, and they would help me with whatever I needed, but I was still uneasy.
Why was I going to a boarding school? Simply because since the accident, nothing has gone well for me. From being beaten, to almost raped by my perverted ex boyfriend, to beating up a student at school, and to being hunted by wolves, my life was far from normal. All because my parents were born into a life of fantasy and magic and wonder… A life I had no intentions of living, but I have no choice.
I woke up panicked and sweaty as I had done so many nights in the past few months, from a nightmare of things breaking into my house and harming me in a number of spine chilling ways. As I also done every other morning, I checked the clock, jumped out of bed, and ran to the bathroom to shower for my job I was inevitably late for.
Half an hour later I looked in the bathroom mirror at my reflection. I was 5’6. My long black hair was pulled up in a messy bun atop my head, and my light blue eyes were lined with a dark brown eyeliner. My thin figure was fitted with a McDonalds uniform and my eyes gazed over paling skin, criticizing the lack of a tan. With one more look over my body I quickly turned on my heel and ran for the door.
When I arrived at work, it was nearly lunch hour, and my boss walked up to me immediately as I was putting down the chip fryer and getting ready to clear tables.
“You’re two hours late again, Ms.Thomas.” my boss, Mr. Kingsley said when he approached. He was a burley man, chubby, grey hair, and a really crabby attitude since his wife left him 2 years ago.
“I’m sorry,” I replied sheepishly. “I haven’t been getting much sleep lately.”
“Well see that you do that for your next job. As for the hours you’ve missed, expect it taken out of your pay.” he grumbled as he stalked off. I sighed loudly and picked up the spray bottle and cloth, moving towards a dirty table that a few teenagers vacated while Mr. Thorn was confronting me about my poor performance. Just a few more hours, I thought. Then I’ll be away from this crap for good.
“He seriously needs to lighten up or get laid or something.” a boy said from behind me. I jumped and dropped the bottle on the floor with a loud thud, causing the boy behind me to laugh. “Someone’s a little more clumsy than usual.”
“Shut up, Kyle.” I said as I picked up the bottle and stood to face him, frowning.
“Aw come on Skylar, you know you love me.” he grinned. I rolled my eyes and smirked.
“Like a toothache.” I retorted which caused him to laugh again.
Kyle Parker was my best friend since we were in preschool together. He had dirty blonde hair and light golden brown eyes. He was tall, about 6’2, and was built fairly well like rest of the guys in the pack.
