Chapter Two

“Why were you so mean to me, Vasilia?” Patience asked at dinner, using her fork to chase a stray pea around her now empty plate.

I poked at my mash potatoes, wishing there had been some gravy left. No such luck for me, I suppose. “Because I wanted to yell at those jerks without making a bad impression on you. Ms Raven would kill me!” I told her lightly.

“By the looks of it, she thinks you’ve already accomplished that.” Patience pointed out, casting a glance at Ms Raven, who was watching our every movement like a hawk.

“Also, I was pretending not to know english.” I told her, scooping a heaping forkful of potatoes into my mouth.

They were dry.

“Really?” Patience giggled, polishing off the last of her juice-mango, by the looks of it.

“Vasilia Vale, please report to the main office ASAP!” Ms Raven yelled, after receiving a message from Lily, our receptionist, who also organized fundraising events. Everybody loved the blonde lady. The perfect role-model for any orphan. She was tall, healthy, and hard-working, being an orphan herself, and had worked a ton to manage to buy herself her own house, without a mortgage.

I looked to Patience and rolled my eyes. “Trouble again, by the looks of it.” I mumbled, and Patience sighed.

“When is Ms Raven going to realise you’re not the devil’s spawn?” She asked.

“I don’t know? Probably never.” I responded angrily. “Until the day she’s dead.”

“How do you think she’ll die? Old age? Angry, hateful, past orphanage resident?” Patience asked unexpectedly.

“Woah kid, slow down!” I said immediately. “That is a dark path. DO NOT linger there, kay?”

“Kay.” She said woefully, giving me puppy dog eyes.

“Also, I am not that vengeful.” I informed her, standing from my chair. “Now, I am going to the front office to receive whatever form of punishment Ms Raven is going to give me, because of whatever reason she has. Most likely because I didn’t finish washing all the crayon off the tables in the playroom.”

Patience gasped, “No way! That’s nearly impossible!”

I nodded, sighing. “That’s probably it. I’ll get going now. See you later, kiddo!”

“Alright! I’ll save you dessert if we are lucky enough to have any!” She called out as I walked.

“Ah, Ms Vasilia Vale!” Ms Raven greeted, uncharistically happy, nice, and joyful. What the hell did I do to get her this mocking?

I turned the corner with her, still a little confused. “Um, Ms Raven, what is going-”

As I entered the foyer of the Orphanage, I noticed Curtis, a woman who resembled him who I could only guess was his mother, and Lily, chatting aimlessly with the mother of Curtis.

“-On?”

“Oh, sweetie pie,” Ms Raven continued, smiling brightly at me. “You’ve finally been adopted. At the age of 17. Amazing! And by a millionair, no less. My, the gods have smiled upon you, haven’t they?”

I looked back to Ms Raven, surprised. She held a smile, with a beyond furious look in her eyes. “Haven’t they?” She asked again, sounding bitter.

I gave her my own bittersweet smile. “I guess they have!” I said excitedly, sound fake. On the inside, I smirked. Yeah, sure, I was happy to be adopted. All my post-graduation plans totally in flames now. Gone, like a bitter breeze catching a loose paper, and sending it away.
