RECAP:
"I'm pretty sure you know." my mom whispered to me. It made me curious, and I prepared myself to see someone from school. But I still wasn't ready for what I saw.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I blinked, I rubbed my eyes, but the picture stayed the same.
CHAPTER 5: GETTING TO KNOW
[CHASE]
The person I had to spend the rest of my life with, was…
Kara Adams.
Apparently, I wasn't exactly an expected companion either, for I saw her choking on her water, while she let her eyes bulge out of her face.
"Good evening. How are you doing, Chase?" Kara's father asked, obviously unaware of the shock that I was in.
"Um- fine, sir. Thank you, ..Mr. Adams." I really did not know of any other way to answer the question. I hated being so formal. It just doesn't do for me.
"Oh please, we're practically family now," he chuckled lightly, "call me Brant."
"Oh okay… Brant.." the awkward answer brought out laughter from all the parents, and even one of the waiters.
We all took a seat, prepared to eat dinner. Neither of us opened our mouths and spoke once, though we did politely answer questions that both parents seemed to have so many of. Then Kara decided to speak up;
"Mom, dad, Mr and Mrs. Fallon, I think it best if we excuse ourselves from here. We should probably have some bonding time on our own, and watch a movie or something."
Of course both parents thought it completely reasonable, and even laughed a little bit, when Kara mentioned "bonding time". They all murmured "of course"s and "why hadn't we thought of that"s before they actually set us free.
"You kids have fun." I recognized the voice to be mom's, but I wasn't sure since I was half way out the door.
As soon as the door closed, Kara began walking, and of course, being the non-thinker that I am, I mindlessly followed her into the elevator.
"You know I hate this." she said as she broke the silence, and I knew she was talking about the marriage. "And I also happen to know that you hate this too. So, let's just pretend."
I glanced her way, confused. For the first time that day, I actually looked at what she looked like. To state the obvious, she was pretty. Not in that special, glowing way pretty- but just the normal pretty. But I couldn't have cared less. I really didn't care about anything these days; not dad's company, not Kara, not grades and now that I think of it, not even Araina. I guess the magic that I felt towards her, had disappeared.
Nonetheless, I was reminded of the dinner on Saturday, and I groaned, forgetting about where I was; in an elevator with my fiance. The thought of it disgusted me.
Kara, thinking I groaned because of my hatred towards the marriage, replied;
"I said, let's just pretend, idiot. Are you deaf?"
Again, I looked at her, confused. She giggled.
"Look, you don't like me, and I don't like you. We both don't like that we will be marrying each other, but we also don't really give a crap about it. So, we pretend in front of our parents that we are a goody good couple that has unintentionally fallen in love, and is completely okay with the fact that we will be marrying each other. But, when we are on our own, we don't care about what each other does. I won't bother you, if you decide to fool around with girls unless you don't caught by my dad, and you don't need to start nosing in my business. Deal?"
