Microwave at Midnight
"Where are we going to get a microwave?" I asked Steven. Steven and Hagan were spending the night at my house. We started out just playing video games and then we started watching YouTube. We stumbled across a video of how to make an arc smelter, and we all decided we were going to make it.
"I have one at my dad's house, I can call him and we can walk," Steven replied. It was 10pm and bitterly cold outside.
"You sure we should go now? How far away is your house anyway?" I asked.
"It's only 5 miles away," Hagan interjected.
I was seriously contemplating if we should go that late while it was 11 degrees outside. I was thinking, We're not going to make it and I'm gonna pass out. They both finally convinced me that we could make it and we were going to carry it in Hagans bag. We all rapped up in blankets and jackets and made makeshift ski masks and we started the long journey. When I stepped outside it was like I ran into an ice wall. The cold air that shot up my nose gave me a brainfreeze. As we were walking it got pretty boring within the first mile so we decided to play some games. First we started playing leapfrog in the middle of the street, then it changed to a dance off, and after that we just made jokes. Right before we left my subdivision I was having second thoughts.
"Guys, curfew is at like midnight, I don't think we'll be able to make it back in time," I said. I sat down in the middle of the road, trying to convince them that I do not want to move.
"Come on we've gone this far already, we can make it." Hagan opposed and walked over to me and grabbed my hand with Steven and they picked me up.
"Think of all the things we'll be able to make" Steven said. They finally convinced me to go but I knew it was not the smartest idea. We finally made it into town at about 11 o'clock and the temperature had raised a little. We could not decide who should carry the microwave and the bag so we came up with a way to choose. Who ever had counted the least amount of their color car would have to carry the microwave.
"White!" Steven called.
"Red!" Hagan said.
"I guess I get blue then," I said.
As we were walking there were a lot of silver and gray cars. Steven, every once in awhile, would see a white car pass and he was now up to 10. Hagan was at 2 and I was at 3. I thought for sure I was not going to have to carry the microwave home. By the time we had passed Speedway, Hagan was in second with 12, Steven in first with 18, and me in last with 5. By this time we were all really tired and it was going on 11:30. Being us we decided to start speaking in chinese.
"你喜欢吃面条吗?" I asked.
"不,我不喜欢吃面条" Steven said.
"你叫什么?" Hagan asked with no answer.
We made it to the bridge that hangs above the railroad tracks. We were all joking around. Steven had made us swear not to say anything to anyone what he had already done multiple times. There was a train passing under us really fast.
"I wonder what would happen if we jumped on the train?" Hagan asked.
"Probably die," I assured him.
"We'd probably break all three of our legs," Steven said in a serious tone.
Hagan and I just looked at him and bursted out laughing. We made fun of Steven the rest of the way to his house. As we finished crossing the bridge and got closer to Stevens house, we decided that we should probably calm down to save energy.
By the time we got to his dad's house it was midnight. I had counted 6 blue cars, Hagan counted 21, and Steven counted 20. The microwave was sitting on the porch and we were all miserable. We took out the glass plate inside and tried to put the microwave in the bag. The microwave could not fit and we had no idea what we were going to do. We put it in sideways and it fit so we walked around in circle to see if it would hold. The bag sounded like it was ripping and not wanting to ruin Hagans bag I took the microwave out. Finally, Steven had the idea for me to carry it on my back with the door hung over my shoulder. It was about 1am when we started heading back to my house. As we were walking an old man in a truck passed us and asked if we wanted a lift. We kindly declined his offer and continued walking. We walked about a mile when Steven and Hagan were complaining they were dying of laughing, and because they were freezing. Their fingers were beginning to turn purple so I gave Hagan my extra shirt to wrap his hands in, and Steven the blanket that was covering my shoulder where the microwave was. We decided that we would not make it back because we were all too tired so I called my mom. She came and picked us up and took us home. She came to our call like Poseidon came to Polyphemus' pleed. She was not mad because we had to pick my little brother up as well. He had not said where he was going.
"This would make a good personal narrative," I said.
"Yes, we should both write it about this," Steven replied.
When we got home we were too tired to do anything so we just laid on the floor and talked.
"This was a wonderful bonding moment," Hagan said
"No it wasn't Hagan, it was horrible, cold, and exhausting." I replied.
"How are we going to relate it to the Odyssey?" Steven asked me.
"We could relate it to how my mom came to help like Polyphemus went to Poseidon for help." I answered.
It was not all that bad. Steven, Hagan and I had bonded even closer now and we have a microwave to start our project. I learned I encourage others and put my friends first, my friends are not the most determined, the reward for determination is great, and do not get a microwave at midnig
