Immigration.
There are 316 million residents in the United States. Approximately 80 million are of first or second generation. The United States has maintained being a popular destination for migrants. The news has been flooded with information on illegal migration into the United States but not much is addressed about legal migration and citizenship.
In order to even apply for a visa, a foreign citizen must be sponsored by a US citizen relative, a lawful resident or a prospective employer. Congress is the governing body over policies for immigration. They control entry and exit, how long a person can stay and when they must leave. The USA Patriot Act and Visa reform act of 2002 had major impacts on visa processing. As the US moves forward with a growing mass of people, regulations will continue to have to be modified for our changing world.
To petition for an alien relative the initial cost is $420 to process. The government could choose to increase this fee in order to regulate how many people could afford to legally apply. Unfortunately this would probably cause an increase in illegal immigrants.
There are several factors on behavior and crime that can keep people from being able to immigrate to the US. A person can be denied entry or have the privilege to be in the US revoked because of crimes committed. If someone who is not in the US legally decides to try and vote in a citizen only election, they can be deported. There are several cases of crimes, such as murder and rape, that have been committed by people not legally in the United States. An enforcement of a zero-tolerance policy would eliminate the over crowded prisons and courtrooms in the United States with cases that involve people from other countries and would return them to their country.
There is an expectation of immigrants in the United States. It is expected the you will register for a Social Security number, get a job, housing, education and be a viable addition to the population in the country. Continuing to have high standards set for those looking to move to this country is important. Not only does the US need to recognize the cultures and backgrounds of other countries but those coming to the US need to be tolerant of the cultures already present.
Overall the United States has several rules and regulations in place for immigration into the country. With the continuance of war with other countries and refugees, this country is faced with an ever increasing population of people who are immigrants. Unless born of native deceant, almost all the population of the US consists of migrants from various countries. It is important that we stay open as a melting pot of cultures and people but maintain a common goal for all of the people involved. Regardless of origin, everyone should have a common goal of having the right to the pursuit of happiness.
