Chapter 1: The Sun Will Rise

Set after Scream. Dewey is coping with Tatum's death and Gale's about to leave town on business.
Dewey was laying in the hospital bed. His back was stitched up and he had severe nerve damage from the amount of time the knife was in his back. But that pain was nothing like the pain he was experiencing in his heart.
His little sister Tatum hadn't made it through the murders. Her head was smashed in the garage door of Stu Macher's house. He hadn't seen her body. Maybe it was better that way. He overheard the doctor's description of how limp, pale, and lifeless her body was. For that, he was glad he could remember her the way he last saw her, and not the way she last was.
He hated Billy Loomis and Stu Macher. He hated them for trying to kill Sidney. He hated them for killing his sister. His baby sister. Sure, she teased him way too much and made him feel like less of a man than he really was, but at the end of the day, they loved each other. He had 17 years of memories with her. But they were only memories, they'd soon fade away.
Man. Tatum wouldn't get to go to her graduation or senior prom. Dewey knew how she had been looking forward to those events. And because of those bastards, she'd never get to live those.
But as much as he hated Billy and Stu, he hated himself more. What was he thinking? A moonlit walk when two killers were on the loose!? If he would've stayed outside the house, maybe he could've done something to save her. He could've saved her life. But now she was gone and there was nothing he could do about it. He was totally helpless.
Nonetheless, his walk had been with Top Story's Gale Weathers, a woman who he'd never thought he'd be taking a romantic walk with. God, he was so attracted to her. And she was pretty sure she was attracted to him, too, though it was hard to believe. She was so... there were no words. She was beautiful, he guessed, but that wasn't enough to explain how he felt about her. He felt a deep longing for her when he stared into her blue eyes. And when she smiled at him he felt as if he knew her for years, or as if he was destined to know her forever.
He felt this tremendous guilt. How could he have been falling in love with this fantastic woman when he should've been protecting his sister? HE deserved to die, not Tatum, for being a terrible brother. That was a weight that would burden him for the rest of his life.
He heard a knock at the door. "Come in," he croaked.
"Hey," a woman came in with a handful of flowers and a smile. It was none other than Gale Weathers.
"Hey," Dewey smiled for the first time in a long time. It was nice to see her face again.
"How ya holding up?" Gale asked, kneeling by his bed.
"Recovering and coping," Dewey replied.
"Good," Gale looked into his eyes, "Listen, I am so sorry about Tatum. I feel terrible. I can't even imagine how you feel." Dewey forced a weak smile. People had been saying that for days.
He didn't blame Gale for what happened. It was totally his fault. But even though he had felt so amazing around her, seeing her now filled him with this great pain. It was almost unbearable. Yet in the back of his mind he hoped that if Tatum couldn't come back, maybe he'd keep Gale around. His feelings around her were so conflicting.
"I had to come here before I left," Gale continued on.
"You're leaving?" Dewey tried not to seem too disappointed, because she didn't sound all that sad.
"Yeah...I have to go to New York to meet with a few publishers and work on my book," Gale said.
"You're not going to stay for a few more days?"
"I can't, Dewey. This could be my big break. But I'll call and write, I promise. And I won't be gone forever."
Dewey saw the determination and excitement dancing in her eyes. He said nothing and relaxed back in bed. He figured if he was going to have any sort of a future with Gale Weathers, he'd let her do her thing for now. They'd keep in touch. And he was happy for her, it might just be her big break, like she said.
She still noticed the disappointment in his eyes. He could tell she knew what he was feeling. Like Tatum could always tell what he was feeling. Now sadness filled his eyes. Gale looked at him sympathetically and smiled at him. She had a heart-breaking smile. Dewey's heart pounded in his chest as Gale bent over him and kissed his lips. He felt the cut on her lip. Oh yeah, she was scarred, too...
Gale put her hand on his. "Dewey...everything's going to be okay. It'll be alright."
The sun will rise
The sun will rise
When you've lost your lights
The sun will rise
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
