The great wall(Patches)

Patches clawed at the seemingly infinite walls in a feeble attempt to escape his enclosure.

Anytime now....
Just gotta reach a little higher....

But it was no use. The glass was smooth, with no nicks or crannies to anchor his tiny claws.

Defeated, he got down and looked up at the walls. Each time he tried to escape they seemed to get higher.

Patches was about to call it a day when he heard a loud thump.

Then another

And another

Suddenly something burst into the room, panting and prancing about.

It peered into his enclosure.

It was furry, had big, black eyes, a wet nose, and a drooling mouth.

Oh shit

The creature stuck his enormous head into Patches's enclosure, then proceeded to sniff and lick everything, including Patches himself.

The second that tongue hit Patches's head, he dashed in the direction of one of his hides, only to find that it too, had been toppled over.

Patches curled up in the corner of his enclosure, waiting for this to pass.

Eventually, the creature lost interest, and started sniffing some books on a table next to his cage.

A book fell in

The door opened and Patches's caretaker entered and gasped.

"Bad dog! You're not supposed to be in here!"

With that, she grabbed him by the collar and dragged him off.

Patches thought he heard a faint apology escape the dog's lips.

Patches looked around. His cage was a mess, his water was everywhere, there were mealworms crawling about, his hides were all overturned, and there was a book leaning against the edge of the enclosure.

Patches jolted.

The book!

It leaned against the wall in a way that created a ramp, almost too steep to climb.

Patches scrambled over to it, instantly scaling the book.

He looked back. After 2 years, he was finally out. He was free.

A scaly spread across Patches's face.
