Despite being treated lunch by his boss on his first day, Roy faced the wrath of his boss a few days afterwards. On his fourth day of work, the first day without Mr. Ma around, his boss was grumpier than usual, and demanded him to get lots of files from design and finance departments. A lot of people went back and forth to his office, including Mr. Huang and Mr. Ding, delivering stacks of papers and folders to his desk, which created quite a commotion.
"Wang Yuan!!!" Karry shouted from inside his office. "Can't you be more quiet??!"
"S-s-sorry boss!" Roy hastily replied back. Alas, he clumsily knocked over the glass vase on his desk with a folder that he was holding. The vase toppled and seemed to fall down in slow motion, before crashing to the floor. Roy watched in horror at the shattered remains of the vase. His face turned pale when he saw his boss standing on the door.
"Uh, I'm r-really s-s-sorry, B-boss," he stuttered. He pushed Karry away from the glass pieces. "Y-you should step back while I c-clean it."
Karry ignored him, walked to the phone on Roy's desk and dialled a number. "Mr Ao, send a janitor to my office right now. We have a broken glass shattered across the floor. Thanks."
He then turned his attention to his assistant. "You. Come inside."
Roy, still shocked, followed his boss inside. "Close the door," he ordered coldly. Roy was terrified because it seemed that his boss was really angry at him. He closed the door quietly and stood in front of the desk, looking at the floor, waiting for the scolding.
"Stand there," Karry pointed in front of his desk. "Face that wall."
"Huh?" Roy looked at the boss, confused, but Karry glared right back at him and pointed at the wall. He was standing in 90 degrees to his boss, so that he was facing the wall and his boss' desk was on his right. He immediately looked away from his boss and faced the wall quietly. It reminded him about punishment at school where you were asked to stand against the wall to reflect.
Roy stood in silence while his boss continued typing a long email and doing some calculations. He could hear someone cleaning the glass pieces outside, but inside it was all silence except for keyboard tappings. He wondered what his boss was typing. Could he be typing his termination letter? He had only worked for 4 days, after almost 2 months looking for job, and he screwed this one big time. His mind flew to his mother back home, and he imagined that she would be very disappointed. All these thoughts and the suffocating silence were too much for him and after five minutes tears started forming on his eyes, and he wiped it with his sleeves.
Karry noticed this but he ignored it and keep quiet, and continued working. However after some time his assistant broke down into silent sobs, no matter how much he tried to hide it, it was obvious that he was crying. Karry couldn't concentrate anymore, so he closed his eyes and took a deep sigh. "What in the world is wrong with you?"
Roy wiped his eyes. "A-am I in t-trouble?" he said in between his sobs.
"Yes, you're in trouble."
"A-are you going t-to fire me?"
"I am going to fire you if you don't stop crying."
"Eh?" Roy couldn't believe his ears. He immediately took a few deep breaths to compose himself and wiped tears from his eyes. Karry walked and stood right in front of him.
"Oi. Look at me."
He braved himself to look at his boss with eyes still wet. "Do you know why I'm angry with you?"
"B-because I broke that vase?"
"No. It's because you are so noisy outside I can't concentrate."
