Let me start off here by explaining the process of shining. It was ironic that the year 2020 was the year they took corrective surgery to a whole new level. Luckily for me I could never afford the surgery, so all I can tell you is what I'd heard.
Imagine better than perfect eyesight. Beautifully vivid colors, excellent night vision, and amazing uv reflection. Stare straight at the sun and not see a single spot, ever. In some cases there were claims of foresight, the ability to see a few seconds ahead. However, that was dismissed as part of the brains adjustment to the new information it was receiving.
Sounds great huh, everyone was getting it, even people who's eyesight was just fine. Everyone who could afford it anyways. By the time you were finished you'd spent roughly $7,000.
Part of it was cosmetic too. You were simply not cool without those creepy science fiction looking eyes. Now I don't know much about this process but, It looked like the black dot of your pupil was filled with mercury.
I turned 17 in the year 2033 when an amazing solar event happened. A solar flare ejected clouds of electrons, ions, and atoms through space. After one day it could be seen coming. On the second, the entire population of earth was standing outside watching the wonderful display of cloudy colors approaching.
The moment these particles entered our atmosphere. All those fancy eyeballs exploded. A lot of people died that very night, but most suffered many years of blindness and neglect.
