Chapter 1: The Library Seirune
I made my very first step into a library when I was two. My mom wanted to get some reference books for her own use and she had decided to take me along. She told me that I couldn't stop walking, though a bit unsteadily, down each shelf. When I fell, instead of crying, I stood up and continued on with my task -- gliding my little hand along the books and giving a kind of sound that made my mom think I was saying, "Wow..." It was as though I revered the library.
Then, Levira appeared in my life three years later and when I mean appeared, I mean really appeared out of nowhere -- one moment I was eating my breakfast when she suddenly flew out and stood in front of me. By then I'd already made countless number of trips to the library. Before that, I always thought nothing could beat the wonderful feeling of stepping into a library, but I was wrong. Unbelievably, when Levira came, it was the first time in my life to feel completely mesmerised and exhilarated.
She was about the size of my small palm and had always remained that way. Her looks didn't change either, looking the same with her auburn hair tied up neatly into a fish braid, positioning more to the right, making it glide down her right shoulder and down to her waist. Her fringe was swept elegantly to the side, her eyes the colour of forest green. She had always been in the same brown dress, which always reminded me of mahogany archaic books, reaching down to her knees with swirls of ribbons below her waistline. She carried along with her the very same book wherever she went which changes everytime she finishes a particular story.
Then there were her yellow wings, the type of colour that suited perfectly with brown. Strange markings were written over the magnificent transparent membrane, giving much proof to who she was: my Library Ellerwyn, and me her Library Seirune.
I found out a bit later that my kind are rare. Really rare like once in a blue moon thing. I mean, there are such people call the Reading Seirunes -- those who love to read, and I do definitely love to read, which made me wonder a lot on why I'm not a Reading Seirune but a Library Seirune. But if I contemplate on this, to tell you the truth, making trips to libraries actually appeal more to me.
Now, if you think Ellerwyns stay in each Seirune's life forever, you're wrong. They exist to help us find our 'other half' who is alike (there are of course cases whereby a Seirune gets together with a Seirune who is not of the same kind). With their mission done, Ellerwyns disappear right after two Seirunes exchange their love for each other. Where they go after that, we don't really know, but all we know is that they return back to their families, according to what most Ellerwyns say.
Well, as for me, it seems I will never have a love life, but I didn't care about that.
I know I was selfish, but I treasured my friendship with Levira more than anything. She had been with me for almost all my life and during bad times, she was sure to make me smile again. I was bullied when I was young, seen as being different, so it meant a lot to me if Levira stayed with me or not, though now of course, things have changed and I'm able to make friends.
And it was because of my selfishness that my family kicked me out. Since I refused to fall in love, what are the chances of Levira ever getting a chance to meet her family? Even my grandfather whom I was supposed to have very close relations with said that I was a disgrace to the family.
Sure, I was sad and depressed, but I quickly got over it with Levira's help. She was fine with my self-centredness anyway, I think. So for five years, I had been staying in the school's hostel and I survived on the monthly allowances my parents sent to me. As long as they didn't see me, it was fine for them I guess.
So while I was relating all these details to you, I'd been sitting at a table, provided by the national library, reading a book. Levira was somewhere among the shelves, looking through the books and deciding on what kind of book she wanted to read next as she needed it to change the information in her magical book. And no, the school library was not a place for me at all. It lacked the gamut of book genres -- something I really dislike because it limits on the types I can read on.
Just as I was about to read on something really interesting about Greek Mythology, Levira suddenly flew out, looking completely flustered. "Ijustsawanotheroneofourkind!"
"What's the thing that's so important that you have to interrupt me when I'm reading?" I snapped, irritated, though in a hushed tone. It would have been really ironic if a Library Seirune like myself didn't follow the number one rule when in the library -- keeping silent. "And if you don't say it properly, I'm going to ignore you and continue with the book."
She took a few deep breaths and when she finally steadied her breathing, she said again, this time calmly, "I just saw another one of our kind." Her eyes sparkled with excitement.
At first, I thought it was a prank to help me end my selfishness, but then I realised she wasn't the type to joke around.
A few seconds later, Levira started to jump up and down on the table while pointing to my left, and when I did turn my head to that direction, my eyes immediately widened in disbelief.
It can't be...
