Chapter 13: Into the deep
There were three buildings to my school, and they were built in a U-shape.
There was the classroom block, where all kinds of lessons were conducted. Labs, Art rooms, Music rooms and many others were located there, together with our classrooms, of course. It was located at the left side vertically, if you viewed it in bird's eye view.
Then, the middle block was the main building, located horizontally below the tip of the classroom block. The library, multi-purpose hall (where Assemblies took place) and the three lecture theatres were there. Link-ways were built on every level to connect this building together with the building on the left, and on the right.
Following that, on the right, built vertically was the sports building. The Indoor Sports Hall, Gym, Squash courts and other types of courts were there. The one thing that made the U-shape not entirely perfect was the outdoor swimming pool located just on the right of the building, and that swimming pool was where I was heading at the moment. From the hostel -- consisting of three small buildings which were separated from the school -- it was just about a five minute walk, or maybe lesser.
As I walked as quickly as I could, the question 'How in the world did they get in?' kept gnawing at my mind. During the night, there would always be security guards patrolling around the area so as to ensure that there were no students roaming around the school grounds, and normally these students that they were expecting to catch were students living in the dormitories. Cameras were also turned on. Were they not afraid at all that they would be caught? I knew, I was also taking a risk... But I needed to take Snowy back from them.
I stopped in my tracks when I saw that the gate to the swimming pool was slightly opened. I breathed out heavily, not quite believing that they -- whoever they were -- were able to switch off the electricity to the the electromagnet used to keep the door locked and closed.
My eyes travelled upwards, then widened. Red lights were not present on the cameras, which meant one thing: they weren't switched on.
"The Snowy-nappers must be really good with technology... They even managed to find out a way to shut off the cameras?" Levira exclaimed in awe.
I nodded my head solemnly, then walked cautiously towards the opened gate, swinging it not entirely closed once I'd entered the area. It wouldn't hurt to take a precaution. The swimming pool glittered under the moonlight, and adding on to the dim brightness of it were the white lights below the water surface. Other than that, there were hardly anything else luminous -- even the lights along the huge stone steps (for audience's use during some swimming competitions) on the four sides were off.
I walked a few more steps forward out into the light, then saw four figures standing by the side of the pool.
"Ah, our guest is finally here." I narrowed my eyes at the girl standing in front of me.
She was one of the Physics Seirune, with shoulder-length, curly hair and a body any bimbo would die for to have. Her eyes would had been beautiful if not for the amount of eyeliner around her eyes that made her look as though she lacked sleep.
Beside her was another girl, a little bit shorter than her, and probably also a little bit shorter than I was. A pair of black-framed spectacles sat upon her nose, making her look a bit geeky. But judging by how she actually took part in all of this, she probably wasn't as innocent as she looked. She was yet another Physics Seirune.
Both the Physics Ellerwyn had wings of grey, and in their hand was some kind of device which I had never really seen properly before, but which probably helped them in experiments which involved things like light, measurements through the use of vernier caliper and micrometer screw gauge, and sound.
The other two were boys. One of them was rather plump, someone I recognised to be one of the Technology Seirunes. He had glasses on, and freckles dotted his face. His Ellerwyn had a pair of white wings, and a laptop bag in his hand.
The other was tall, with gelled hair, and a face covered with scars of pimples that had already dried up. A Chemistry Ellerwyn with a white coat, and white wings was beside him.
One thing in common about all of them: they were the smartest in my class, though they were also people who couldn't beat me, even though they were Science Seirunes. The one and only Technology Seirune in the clique had a bright mind as well. Just knowing that fact made me understand why they were doing this to me.
"Where's Snowy?" I asked outrightly.
The Chemistry Seirune, Leonard, snorted. "Snowy? You actually named a soft toy? How childish." He smirked, and so did the rest. I lifted my head up higher, showing them that I was not hurt at all by the insult, and that I was not in any way intimidated by them.
"Any idea why we're doing this?" Geeky girl, Rach, spoke, a mocking look on her face.
I raised an eyebrow, then surprised myself when I said, "Because all of you are too stupid to beat me in all the tests that we've taken?" Having guts was actually something I didn't have, ever since the bullying since elementary, but then determination seemed to have helped me by giving me inner strength.
Tera, the one with the great body, walked forward and slapped me across the face. Ants seemed to be crawling about my face right after that, stinging my cheeks multiple times.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?" Levira shouted at her.
Tera glared at Levira. "Waire, would you be so kind to shut this Library Ellerwyn up?"
I stared at her. "How could you actually tell your Ellerwyn to do something so low? All Ellerwyns are supposed to be friends!"
She scoffed. "And you actually believe that?" She snapped her fingers, and Waire immediately flew towards Levira, her white scarf fluttering together with her long, black hair. Levira screamed, then escaped in the other direction, leaving me alone with the rest of the Seirunes -- they were followed by the other three soon after.
I clenched my fist, my voice wavering in anger. "If your Ellerwyns hurt Levira, I swear -"
"What? Don't you remember that Snowy is with us right now?"
I sighed, utterly frustrated. It was so unfair that they had something to use to threaten me. "What do you want?"
"Isn't it suppose to be easy, especially for you, the cleverest person in our class?" Fat boy Jarter spat.
I frowned. "You want me to fail on purpose?"
His pig face brightened ominously. "Yes, exactly!"
I crossed my arms and thought hard. For the sake of Snowy I could. But... What about my mother, father, and the grandfather I had? I can't fail them like this. I shook my head, then held my gaze as I looked at them. "No."
Tera blinked a few times. "Excuse me?"
"I said that I'm not going to fail on purpose, and I have a reason for it. It's also for the good of all of you. Even if I did, all of you won't be acquiring number one based on your own effort."
"Don't act like you care about us, Library Seirune!" She paused, as if waiting for me to change my answer, but then said with a sardonic smile, "Fine. Maybe if we tell you where exactly your dog is, you'll change your mind." She pointed towards the swimming pool. "That, is where your little Snowy is. But the thing is, can you swim?" She laughed.
I furrowed my brow every so slightly, not wanting them to realise my dread. Sure, I could swim. I even got myself a swimming certificate to show that I could, but I barely made it to earn it, and why was that? I almost couldn't pass the diving stage-- that was why I refused to even give myself a chance to have a go at the Bronze Swimming Examination. It was that frighterning. I was lucky to be able to get back to the surface just on time before the whistle sounded, and I could get back up because the test only involved the shallower parts of the pool. And this pool we had in school was a whole lot deeper.
I seemed to have started daydreaming unconsciously, because the next thing I knew, Leonard was beside me. With one sweep of his arms, I was in his embrace. I struggled against his grip on my shoulders and legs, wanting to get away from the hands of a despicable person. Once at the edge of the pool, he let go of me, and I was then plunged into the clutching depths of the water.
