Blair

I ran as fast as my legs could carry me.
My breath was rapid and I felt a burn in my side. The water splashed every time the shoes hit the pavement. My hair whipped the air behind me.
God dammit, why did they have to come now? And here of all places?
Of all the paths and alleyways in this big, dumb town, these two morons had to wander into this street, right now?

It stood right behind them. Arm raised. The long claws flashed sharply in the dim glow of the streetlights.
"Get away for fuck's sake! Run!" I shouted loudly and lifted my arm towards them. I quickly chanted the spell inside my head and charged up my palm. An electrical crackling sounded between my fingers.
The two just stared at me, like a couple of dumbfounded deer caught in the headlight of an approaching car.
It flashed its teeth with a ferocious smile and slashed with its arm.
My eyes widened. Shoot! I ordered inside my head.
I was forced back by the sheer force of it, but quickly regained my balance. The blast hit its shoulder. The long, slender body got thrown backwards by the explosion. The claws missed the boy's head, but hit his arm and sent him straight into the brick wall. His body hit the ground and stayed down.
The creature hissed wrathfully in pain and flashed its needle-like teeth, before spinning around and sprinting down the street.
I couldn't let it get away. Not now.
Without tossing as much as a glance at the two kids, I dashed past them. I would have to take care of the injured idiot later.

I ran after it, turned the corner, and followed it down the street. The rain hitting against my face and almost blinding me as I ran. My target wasn't more than ten meters in front of me. Its body was moving unsteadily. The shot had done a great deal of damage. It would take time for it to heal itself. As it looked right now, I could actually catch up to it.
A smile spread across my lips.
The target turned and disappeared down a side street, continued to dart into a badly lit alley.
You're not getting away that easily, I snarled in satisfaction and quickly tailed after it.
My shoes slid across the concrete as I turned the corner. I wobbled and suddenly registered the movement. My eyes widened. The claws swung right through where my head had just been, and I felt the blast of wind against my temple. I jumped back and regained my balance.
A new motion.
Flinging my torso backward I just happened to see the claws hover over my face. I rapidly tossed my body around and slammed my hands against the ground. Shooting my leg up I felt my shoe hit the scrawny body, directly followed by the sharp sound of something cracking. A piercing scream escaped its mouth. I dropped and rolled to the side just in time to avoid the sharp claws. They pierced straight into the concrete, breaking and ripping it up as it pulled on its arm to get loose.
Now was my chance. I got back on my feet, reached my arm out and chanted the spell. Fire.
Nothing happened.
My heart stopped.
No.
Not now.
Just as I finished that thought, my so-called target, now with both arms free, dashed at me. I swiftly ducked and jumped to the side. Unsteady I landed on the pavement. My body felt unusually heavy. I tried catching my breath, but my lungs felt like they were on fire.
I gritted my teeth. My arm quivered.
Fuck.
My eyes darted up and I looked at it. The bloodshot eyes stared back at me with wrath.
I snarled and raised my arm again.
Come on. Just one more time.
My palm heated up. The smile appeared on my lips again.
Yes, now we're talking.
The body in front of me twisted around as it once again threw itself at me. I laughed victoriously. "Die, you fucking-"
An explosion.
I stared blankly in front of me, confused. Heavy smoke rose from my hand as red drops hit the concrete, creating a puddle below me.
For a moment it felt like the whole world stood still. The rain was the only thing moving.
The target had stopped and was staring at me, almost in awe. The scrawny body didn't move a muscle. We stood like this and just stared at each other. You could have dropped a needle and it would have sounded like an anvil.
Then, fast as a gunshot, its body launched around and disappeared down the alley. It was like a straight hit to the face and I snapped out of my daze. The pain pierced through my arm and I had to bite my teeth together not to gasp. It felt like I'd held a grenade as it went off. All the skin was blown away from the center of my palm, and the blood was gushing out.
I had no choice but to keep it together, and raised my eyes to look after my target. Its body vanished into the darkness of the alley.
"Wait!" I yelled and started running. My feet pounded against the ground and I gasped for air. My arm shuddered painfully with every movement, but I didn't have time to think about that now. I'd come too far to give up. I'd finally gotten another chance to do this. I could make it. I could actually make it!
I suddenly found myself at the end of the alley.
It was empty.
