Balloons

Grant walked through the door, expecting the welcoming sight of his wife sitting relaxed on the couch, usually concentrated on her laptop with a cup of coffee forgotten on the table. Her face would unglue itself from the screen, a glowing smile. (He wouldn't admit it, but it was his favorite part of the day.)

Instead it was silent, no trace of anyone who could have been sitting on the couch. The laptop was closed up and resting on the table. Grant immediately tensed. It was never this quiet. As if Skye didn't make enough noise, the rest of the team usually came over to their house. Sometimes it was Fitzsimmons talking in fast gibberish about their new project, or Hunter and Bobbi, who liked to bicker and joke simultaneously.

"Skye?" Grant called out. No answer. Instinctively he scanned around the room, searching for anything out of place. His eyes soon landed on the white double doors that led into the kitchen. Instead of being open as always, they were closed shut. He quietly crept over to them. Placing his hand on the handle, he prepared himself for... Well he didn't exactly know. He swung open the door and got something he did not expect.

Balloons. Pouring out of every which direction, different sizes and colors, some floating and some rolling lightly against the ground. He felt amusement play onto his lips. Of course this would happen. "Skye," he repeated, trying to keep a straight face. Soon the balloons cleared enough so that he could see her face, a smile that managed to be both mischievous and elated.

He walked over to Skye and wrapped his arms around her, balloons amazingly still flying out of the kitchen entrance. "Surprise," she said softly giving him a kiss. He couldn't help but smile more, pressing his forehead against hers.

"So what's this really about?" He finally said. She laughed. It wasn't everyday that Skye was this emotional. He knew her well enough. She wouldn't waste time blowing up balloons unless it was for a good reason. He screwed his face up in concentration. What could it be?
"Grant, we're having a baby."

He felt his jaw drop, his eyes widening, yet he made no move to stop it. Now this was something to be surprised about. He was going to be a dad.

"I'm going to be a dad," he said quietly. "I'm going to be a dad!" He repeated excitedly, a smiling growing on his face once more. Taking her hands in his, Grant gently placed them on her stomach. "Our baby is in there," he said with awe.

Skye couldn't help but snort. "Yes Grant. That's where it grows. Now come on, we have some guests here that want food." Immediately two figures walked into view, chatting excitedly.
"I have to admit, that was quite adorable."
"Amazing idea, Daisy."
"I wonder if it's a girl-"
"-or a boy!"

"Fitzsimmons?" Grant looked at the young woman and man, who nodded at him in unison. "You guys are here too?"

"Well yeah. You think I'm gonna blow up all these balloons without them? No way," Skye said, gesturing at the balloons that covered the floor.

"I think my lungs are deflated permanently," Fitz grumbled.

"Leopold that's not possible," Simmons rolled her eyes at him half jokingly.

"Anyways.. they're not the only ones. The rest of the team is coming over to celebrate," Skye said, "and we're probably gonna have pizza. And beer, because if we don't have any then Hunter's gonna throw a fit," Grant chuckled at that.

It wasn't before long when the doorbell rang. Grant opened the door to find Bobbi and Hunter waiting expectantly. "Hey Grant," Bobbi said casually, stepping over the balloons. "Daisy! Congratulations!" She exclaimed when she saw her talking with Fitzsimmons. While she went over to join the group, Hunter strolled in.

"Congrats, Ward," he said, "that baby is gonna be quite the looker, but only cause of her genes," Hunter pointed over as Skye, who was snickering in response. Grant just shook his head and sat down on the couch. "Just go get your beer already."

"Already on it," Hunter smirked, disappearing into the balloon flooded kitchen. Mack came in shortly after, along with Coulson, May, and Lincoln.

"I just can't believe it. You guys have come such a long way and now your'e going to have a family!" Simmons practically squealed out the last part.

"Yeah, but when will it be your turn?" Hunter questioned them, causing Fitz and Simmons to both go bright red. "I mean, you guys don't spend all day in the lab right..?" Everyone was trying as hard as they could not to laugh (even though they weren't succeeding). Hearing the doorbell ring must have been a perfect opportunity to Fitz.

"Uh I'll-er get the pizza. Yep. And some more beer." He fast-walked out of the room and grabbed the money Grant set on the counter along with him. After the pizza box was opened, and it's contents inhaled out of it, the team finished up their congratulations and left the house.

Grant and Skye were left on the couch. He absent mindedly played with her hair. Her hand was resting on her stomach and she was humming contently.

"What are you thinking about?" Grant asked softly. His eyes were beginning to drift close.

"I'm thinking about what it's going to be like, having a family with you," she answered, snuggling closer to his side.

"And?" he whispered.

"I've never been more happy." Grant closed his eyes and smiled to himself. He couldn't agree more. Comfortable silence enveloped them, and dreams took over.
