"Remember to just ignore all the stares."
My mum was doing her normal fretting she does every time I start at a new school.
"And please don't snap at anyone if they try to help you." She continued as rolled my eyes saying it at the same time as her under my breath. We've moved schools at 10 time in the last two years. Usually because of either bullying or the school not suiting my needs. So if I didn't know her speech of by heart, there'd be something wrong.
"Yes mum I get it."
The car stoped as she pulled into the car park.
Mum got out and I watched as she walked towards the back of the car.
She opened the door and I was pulled backwards.
"I know honey, I just get so worried about you." She said smiling at me with her blue eyes fixed on mine. Worry quite clear in them and I don't blame her. I had put her through a lot these last two years.
She put the ramp back up and closed the car door. She went to push me but I put my hand up to stop her.
"I got it." I said before my hands found the metal bar and we headed towards the ofice entrance. I was happy that the entrance was slightly hidden. Yes it was hard for us to find at first but it meant I wouldn't have judgy stares for atleast another 10 minutes.
Or so I thought. When we walked through the door a girl sat behind the counter consumed by her phone. She was blonde with heavy makeup and looked like she was around year 10 or 11.
She didn't even notice us till mum cleared her throat.
"Oh" was all we got from her before her eyes travelled to my wheelchair. The corner of her top lip tugged up slightly, judging me on something I couldn't help. A look I knew all to well.
"Hello I'm Patricia Welin's mother." Mum said obviously also annoyed at this sad excuse of a human.
'Blondey' just gave mum look that said, and...?"
"I'M-A-NEW-STU-DENT." I slowly spoke so her small brain could process it.
"NO-NEED-TO-BE-RUDE." she said leaning toward me over the counter.
"Maddy! Get out now!" All three of us shot our heads in the direction of the voice.
'Maddy' not 'Blondey' rolled her eyes and spat a venomous "bye" at us before flicking her hair and leaving.
"I'm so sorry about her. That was her last chance." A older lady appeared at the counter.
"How may I help you?" She continued smiling gently at us.
"I'm the new student." I answered noticing how pissed mum was.
"Oh lovely." She replied before disappearing off without explanation.
Mum and I gave each other a glance before she returned holding some papers.
"You've already filled out most if the paperwork I can see. But there's just a couple more and we're all done." She said handing mum a pen and the papers.
Mum quickly scribbled in everything as she had to get to work soon and didn't really get excited about the new schools anymore.
"Great. All done." She said as mum handed her the papers back and she tucked them into a folder.
"Did you get your time table and map emailed?"
"Yep." I said pulling them out of my bag.
"Okay. Here's your locker and I trust you brought a lock."
I nodded in response.
"Lovely. Have a nice day then and if you have any issues just come here." She smiled before addressed the people who had just walked in behind us.
Mum and I went to the side.
"Now remember..." she started but I interrupted. "Mum its okay." I said putting my hand on her arm.
She checked her watch before smiling at me.
"I gotta go." She said before kissing me on the head a dissappearing out the door.
I then left out the other door which led me into the main court yard of the school.
I had already had a tour before coming here but I still unfolded the map and placed it on my lap to read it.
I began wheeling myself in the right direction. Ignoring everyones stares as I crossed the court yard.
I was going past a group of girls when I heard one of them saying my name. I looked towards them and immediately noticed tall girl standing with them and was pointing at me.
Blondey, brilliant.
I ignored her and continued heading across the yard when a wind gust caught the map and whipped it of my lap. I tried to catch but instead found myself hopelessly watching as it landed in drain full of rain water.
Fricken fantastic I thought as I heard 'Blondey' snort behind me.
"Ignore her she's always been a bitch to anyone who isn't exactly like her." I looked up from the map to find a girl standing in front of me. She had thick orange hair which she had attempted to control with a white headband. The top few buttons of her top were undone and her eye makeup was heavy.
"Does that mean she's bitch to everyone." I said replying to her comment.
"Basically." She said sighing and glancing towards 'Blondey'.
"Hi I'm Assi." she said looking back at me.
"I'm Patricia. But I prefer Pat." I smiled holding out my hand as it seemed like the right thing to do.
Assi took it and shook it gently like she thought she would hurt me or something.
"I wouldn't want to be a burden but I just kinda just lost my map." I glanced around Assi at my map still lying in the drain.
"No problem." Assi said also looking at the map.
"Do you know your locker number?"
I handed her the print out which had all my information on it.
"Fab!" She squealed once she had read it.
"Your right near mine!" I smiled and began following her as she turned on her heels and started walking.
As we were walking past the oval I couldn't help but notice a girl among the footy boys kicking the ball around. She had the appearance of a girl you don't mess with. But something about her made my heart skip a beat. Maybe...
"So new school ha?" My thoughts were interrupted by Assi.
"Uh yeah about 11th one actually." I said still watching the girl.
"Wow that's a lot." I heard Assi say but I wasn't really paying attention. I was to busy watching her as she scored a goal. For some reason I really wanted to cheer but I decided against it. Don't really want to look like a fool yet it's not even first period.
"I don't really want to be rude but I'm sorry I just have to ask. Why the wheel chair?" I was flicked out of my thoughts by Assi.
"Sorry I shouldn't have asked." She said before I got a chance to answer.
"No it's okay, I was hit by a car a couple years back and lost all feeling in my legs." I didn't really care that she asked I've gotten used to the questions.
"Oh god I'm so sorry." She said raising her hand to her mouth.
"The worst bit is that when I was hit I lost all memory of the last 3 years." I said shrugging.
"Oh geez. So much can happen in 3 years how did you manage? " we were niw entering what seemed to be a locker room.
"Photo albums." I said as we stopped at a locker.
"Well here it is." she said opening it.
"Could you help me find my classes today uf it's not an issue." I asked while loading my books into my locker.
"Sure do you know what you have?" She asked while leaning against the lockers.
"Science, Art, English and French." I said then noticing her grin.
"What?" I said slightly amused by her happy dance.
"I have all if them but art." She exclaimed. I sighed in relief that I had already got a friend and that she'll be with me most of the day.
