I was so angry and scared. I wasn't sure what I would do.

But the panic wore off as we waited. I sat in grim acceptance that whatever happened that night wouldn't be good.

Cat, beside me, was more relaxed than earlier. She leant against me gently. Her hair was soft on my shoulder.

We waited an hour.

Two hours.

Three hours.

And then Cat's head snapped upright, and her finger pointed towards a stooped figure in the gateway.

He was in shadow, but I could see his silhouette stumble in a drunken stupor. He was talking to someone we couldn't see in slurred garble, loudly.

I was frozen. I didn't know what to do. The hatred had drained out of me all of a sudden, and cold fear replaced it.

I recognized that voice from somewhere.

I looked to Cat. She was still too. She looked me in the eye.

With Cat with me, I could do this. I grabbed her hand, grimaced in her direction, and pulled her out of the shadows with me, into the sight of my mother's murderer.

"Who's there?" the man shouted, his words blurring into each other with drink.

"Your son," I said, my voice strong and unwavering. "You murderous bastard."
