My dad left us when I was little. My mum never spoke about him. He was a bad man. And I knew I reminded her of him, so I was good to her. The perfect son in his absence. I've always hated my dad.

I don't know how I knew it was him. A memory, perhaps. The memory of his smell. I could smell it from metres away. Drink and sweat and dirt and women. His skin was oily, reflecting the moonlight. His clothes were grubby but better than mine. And as I saw him clearly then, and felt Cat on my shoulder, I was brave.

"Why did you do it?"

He was standing, dumbfounded, facing me. His face was stricken, yet sneering at the same time.

He gestures casually.

"Never liked the bitch."

I hang my head.

"So, how you doing, son?"

"Better without you."

I was shaking. Heaving sobs began to course through me.

"You ruined my life."

He smiled at me, his rotten teeth showing. "Sorry about that."

He was pure evil.

"Really. Why?"

"You don't want to hear it, boy."

"I'm sure I do."

"Come sit down." He ushered me into the shadows again. Cat walked behind me. We sat on some crates, and he began his tale.
