edith

the beach was peaceful, we didn't get bothered not once yet. justin and hazel were in the water, me taking pictures of hazel because i'm that mom. i admit, the way they were playing and bonding, i was hella jealous. i feel as if hazel and justin have that father-daughter bond even if she doesn't know he's her father. just watching them made me sad. even though hazel loves me and i love her, she's not my own offspring. sighing, i look down at my feet in the sand, feeling as if i was going to cry. infertility shouldn't be a fucking thing.

"edith, are you okay?" i heard justin's voice which made me look up quickly. i wasn't crying but i knew i had that sad look on my face that i quickly tried to hide so hazel didn't notice.

i just nod at him and he sits down. hazel was playing in the sand with the toys justin had bought her a while ago. "i know we've only known each other for a day and a half but you can still talk to me."

"it's not something i want everyone to know yet." i breathe out heavily, feeling his hand on my back.

"mommy, will you go in the water with me?"

i didn't want to considering i couldn't swim. "only if justin goes. i don't wanna die at sea."

"you're not gonna die." justin chuckles, standing up. "but i'll go."

us three walk into the water, justin still wearing his flannel that wasn't see-through. i only went in knee deep, and stood there watching hazel jump with the waves. "i can take you out further if you want."

i shake my head. "i have to watch hazel."

justin picks her up and puts her on his back. she happily held on, justin holding his hand out. "come on."

"i don't want to." i protest.

"come on, mommy!"

i couldn't say no to her so i walked out further into the water, holding justin's hand. when i felt my feet not touching sand anymore, i mentally started to panic but i just moved closer to him. "all you have to do is float." he chuckles.

"if i sit here, i'm gonna sink."

"you're floating now, genius." he starts laughing with hazel. i tried not to panic, but the two in front of me calmed me down so i floated there with ease. "i'll teach you how to swim in the hotel."

"no, i'm like freaking out right now, im good with staying in the shallow ends of pools." i smile, reaching for his hand. he pulled me back toward the shore, well until i was able to stand on my own.

hazel hugs me, "good job, mommy."

"thanks honey." i bend down, kissing her forehead. it was embarrassing that my three year old daughter could swim before me but i really didn't care.

"the sun's starting to go down, do you wanna go out to eat then we could go back to the hotel?" justin questions, grabbing his phone from my bag. he had a questioning look then started typing on his phone.

"yeah sure." i nod. "you hungry?"

hazel nods. "can we have mcdonalds?"

justin and i both nod. even if it is unhealthy, it's still good.
