I slammed my car door shut with much more force than needed, but I wasn't in the best of moods, and I wasn't worried about something that I could easily get repaired. I wasn't worried about anything. Or maybe the problem was that I was. It was so very confusing.
School was an amazing distraction. I was popular, and girls let me do anything I wanted to them. I could have anyone I wanted, I knew it. I loved that about having such an attractive face.
"Yo, Damien!"
A grin plastered itself on my face, and I felt every aspect of it, making me inwardly cringe. How many times had I smiled without it being genuine? Not many. I'd be fine tomorrow. It wouldn't last long. As long as I didn't get suspended. I didn't think I could handle that.
I turned around to face the voice, my arms opening wide in the process. Hug or handshake? I was never certain, causing me to often do both. "Hey, Alex." I stopped walking long enough for him to catch up, wrap his arms around me, pat my back and do some weird handshake I only half remembered. I would remember it tomorrow. I always did. I'd be fine.
At least, that's what I kept telling myself. I was never okay. "What have you been doing all weekend?" he asked me, falling into step beside me. I wriggled my eyebrows, and bit my tongue. I didn't have to say anything.
"Oh," Alex spread his hand out in front of him, "Say no more. Understood." He grinned. I didn't point out that I didn't, in fact, say anything.
I grinned at him anyway, just as a girl I think I was dating walked up to us. "Hey..." I trailed off, realizing I'd forgotten her name.
"Leslie." Alex whispered to me. I never doubted him being my best friend. I opened my arms in the invitation of a hug and she smiled, stepping into my embrace. "Leslie." I finished, winking at Alex, basically saying "Thanks! I never remember their names!"
I leaned down, as if I were going to kiss her, and her lips opened expectantly, eyes closed. Oh, that's pathetic. I went past her lips, to her ear and whispered, "We're done. Sorry, babe."
She winked and bit her lip, leaving a stain of lipstick on her teeth. How did girls live with that much stuff caked on their face? "No problem. We had enough fun to last a life time."
I pretended not to notice what she was implying, even though I did. The thought of it bothered me. She wasn't even that attractive.
"Dude, I honestly would never have thought you would have stooped that low." Alex said, staring with raised eyebrows at her retreating figure. Yeah. Me either.
I pushed his shoulder, a little too hard, causing him to fall into someone. "Sorry," I saw him mutter, placing a quick kiss on the lips of the girl he'd fallen into. Oh, the face of shock was priceless. We walked away without saying another word, until we'd progressed farther down the hall.
"Dude, that was amazing. I will never get used to you doing that." I laughed, literally falling over on my stomach.
He laughs and bursts out singing Twenty One Pilots, "Can you save? Can you save my? Can you save my heavydirtysoul for me?"
We were used to each other singing off-key to various different types of music. We liked everything music related.
"Only if you save mine first. You're the judge! Oh, no! Set me free!" My voice was so off-key that if I hadn't laughed I would have passed out from needing to. Remember what I said about distractions? Alex was my best friend, and I needed him more than I needed anyone. We were always there for each other.
"Beautiful." Alex commented on my singing. I laughed and said, cockily, "I know."
The funniest thing about our off-key singing, was that we could both actually sing. We just didn't care about it. Holding back a laugh, I scanned the people in front of us, catching the eye of a girl staring at us. That happened often.
I smiled at her, when we made eye contact. She narrowed her eyes and frowned at me.
I tapped Alex on the shoulder, still staring at her. I tilted my head toward him, my eyes still trained on her. "Did she just glare at me?"
